McALLEN, Texas The wife of presidential candidate John Kerry (search) told a receptive audience in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas that Kerry would seek out all other options before going to war.
"John will never send a boy or girl in a uniform anywhere in the world because of our need and greed for oil," Teresa Heinz Kerry (search) told about 1,200 supporters at the McAllen Civic Center.
She said her husband, as president, would be able to approach the families of slain soldiers and say, "'I did everything I could to prevent this, I'm sorry.' "
She spoke for about an hour and was interrupted frequently by applause and cheering, The (McAllen) Monitor reported in its Monday editions.
Earlier, Heinz Kerry attended a $1,000-a-head private fund-raiser at the McAllen home of developer Alonzo Cantu. It was not immediately clear how much the event raised.
Speaking at the rally, Heinz Kerry criticized President Bush's working relationships with other nations.
"Diplomacy is not about, 'I'm telling you.' Diplomacy is about, 'what do you think?'" Heinz Kerry said. "If you cannot have respect for the other side, you cannot have diplomacy."
Heinz Kerry, switching to Spanish, encouraged supporters to go to the polls.

Doesn't this make us all feel warm inside?
Kerry, like the rest of the demons, will think he's avoiding war by surrendering American influence. Then, on somebody else's watch, we're attacked. It happened with that pig Carter. It happened with that pig Clinton. And it will happen again, if, heaven help us, we ever put another demonRat in office.
Kerry said Kuwait fails the global test in 1991.
Ketchup Lady is becoming more annoying that Hillary. I didn't think it was possible.
George Bush didn't start the war. As much as Kerry promises to turn the clock back to 9-10 it ain't gonna happen.
Run away! Run away!
Notice how the Kerrys use "kids" and boys and girls when describing the men and women in our armed forces?
Neville Chamberlain avoided war also, millions died because he preferred to live on his knees rather than be a man.
Wonder what Terry was like when she was married to a Republican. Was this her attitude then? Or is it because she now believe that "men should always be little boys" and little boys (and girls) don't go to war? I swear, this woman is beyond the pale.
To borrow a line from R.R. - "there she goes again" with that cr_p about boys and girls when speaking about our military men and women!!!
Please everyone, work very hard to keep this ignorant twit from spending any time in the White House! My sons are not boys nor victims. The thought of this race being so close makes me want to puke.
The thought of this woman being the First Lady is incentive enough to reelect President Bush.
...and meet the Dem First-Lady!
If you elect John Kerry, his wife will be in your face for the next four years.
(That ought to clinch it for Bush.)
"John will never send a boy or girl in a uniform anywhere in the world because of our need and greed for oil," Teresa Heinz Kerry (search) told about 1,200 supporters at the McAllen Civic Center.
Neither will President Bush, Mrs. Heinz Kerry. Neither will President Bush.
As I recall, John Heinz was nothing like this liberal twit politically. What did he see in her? She didn't have a $billion then.
Sounds like the Howard Dean wing is ahead.
Note:Get more popcorn.
Didn't the NY Times Magazine puff piece from yesterday describe Kerry (fleeing the Capitol) as being oh-so-angry at the 9/11 attacks and just itching to get a gun?
So not only would they let a tyrant terrorize a region they would allow the entire global economy to tank. It's really hard for me to believe that the Kerry's, who have made self interest the center of their most significant life choices, are so uncomfortable with the self interest of the United States.
