Kerry Calls for Record Expansion in National Service Offers Affordable College for Young People Willing to Serve America
For Immediate Release
New York, NY - Stopping at New York's City College today, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry unveiled a critical new component of his "Compact with the Next Generation," his plan to engage more than 500,000 young Americans in service each year within a decade. The bold, new national initiative will offer young Americans affordable education in return for serving their country, and in keeping with Kerry's commitment to fiscal responsibility, will be fully paid for by the elimination of the guaranteed profits banks currently make on student loans.
The Harlem stop marked the third day on Kerry's Change Starts with U: Kerry Campus Tour 2004. He was joined at the school by New York Senator Hillary Clinton and Representative Charlie Rangel.

Oh that will be good. If you get banks out of the business of providing lower cost loans to students then you are making the private sector less interested.
Another step toward socialism...
The service isn't a bad concept but what to do if a kid pulls a Kerry and manages to weasel out of service after scoring a few paper cuts.
This is insane.
Rangel was all over the TV saying he started the draft rumor because he wanted the RICH PEOPLE to pay their fair share of the body count [he actually meant rich WHITE people]. The truth about the body count is that the MAJOR PORTION OF THE DEATHS - ARE WHITE PEOPLE.
However, here is Kerry with his plan - WHICH EXCLUDES RICH WHITE PEOPLE. This is insane.
And .. it proves to me .. the draft legislation was USED ONLY TO SCARE PEOPLE - and McAwful is going around to colleges (alone with Moore) and they are still making the statement that Bush is going to reinstitute the draft - when they KNOW IT'S A HUGE LIE.
These people are devoid of morals.
Since when do we have a shortage of teachers and police officers and why should they get free tuition? These are not low-paid jobs and, at least in California, many teachers have been laid off because of budget problems.
And the Dims had the gall to accuse Reagan of "voodoo economics"????
I hope that a bunch of those students he was talking to are either economic or math majors, and read his "plan".
I also hope they notice that those who have already graduated also qualify, thus putting those grads into competiton with new students for the "tuition funding"!
I would also love to know what "sustained, part time effort" is defined as, in terms of hours/year to qaulify for the the "up to" $2,000/year. Is he talking LESS than they could earn at a regular job? Less than minimum wage, even?
