The photo as sized above is from the October 10, 2004 (http://ChamorroBible.org/gpw/gpw-20041010.htm) "Photograph of the Day" page at the ChamorroBible.org website. A smaller image located in the October 2004 archive is also visually impressive. Scientific explanation? That's left to the forum's experts.

This really is excellent photography by Staff Sgt. D. Myles Cullen.

Sorry, but the C-130 isn't going anywhere. The J model is just rolling off the assembly lines as we speak.

The top portion of the photo looks like a neck and part of a chin. With the whispy sides, it reminds me of an angel watching over a proud military. Very moving.

That looks biblical.

Isaiah 34:4 And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.

Revelation 6:14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

All aircraft that are producing lift, i.e. flying, have wingtip vortices. These vortices, kinda like horizontal tornadoes, rotate counter to each other when view from the rear. They tend to sink and move away from the centerline of the aircraft. They are most pronounced when the airplane is heavy, slow and in the landing configuration.

Exodus 19:3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;
Exodus 19:4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.
Exodus 19:5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

Revelation 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

No need for an upstairs bar? Seriously, I would imagine that more thrust was required for short field takeoffs, not more capacity. For capacity they have the C-5

Revelation 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: Revelation 12:2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.

The correct answer is, the 747 has a big bump to make room for the pilot's wallet.

if the turbulence is so bad, doesn't it mean this thing is working awful hard to push itself through the air (i.e. it's not an efficient design)?

Sort of, but the design is good. The vortices happen after the aircraft is past. It is of little importance what contortions the air goes through as it rebounds from bearing the weight of the aircraft, except for other things that might want to use the same air before it settles down.

Terrific replacement for the beloved HerkyBird (C-130).

Never meant as a replacement. A C-130 has functionality far surpassing the C-17 in many areas. For one thing, it can use the smallest and roughest of airfields, including; aircraft carriers, dirt roads, assault strips, and on the ice and snow strips at polar research stations.

The C-130 also has several primary missions other than cargo transport, including; use as gunships, aerial refuelers, troop drops, flare drops, Search and Rescue and polar deployments.

It's a very versatile aircraft with a well earned reputation for being able to operate in the harshest of operating conditions in states of extreme disrepair.

A friend landed one in a corn field on a tiny island (Minami Diato (sp?)- just east of Okinawa) under power of a single engine (contaminated fuel). We flew in another 130, gassed him up, and flew both back to Fatima, Okinawa. Try that with C-17's.
