In the same NY Times article Kerry said that 9-11 didn't change him.

Well, that much is true. He still doesn't get it.

"When Kerry first told me that Sept. 11 had not changed him, I was surprised. I assumed everyone in America -- and certainly in Washington -- had been changed by that day.... But his less lofty vision might have seemed more satisfying -- and would have been easier to talk about in a political campaign -- in a world where the twin towers still stood. "

You can read and take this statement another way - but it's hard to explain -

This is the way Kerry speaks - you can take his words and get different meanings - and this may be why ABC suggest his words are wrongly being used against him. (They(ABC) do the double speak too - )

Kerry is following the same path Clinton took - and you really have to read before, between, and after the lines of text -

Things will never be as simple as they once were with the English language -

It starts with - "Get back to the place -"

Is this what he means - Lesson/Weaken the terrorist threat - If so - then natually the focus would change -

I don't like the guy, but I'm not prepared to condemn every single thing he says just because it's him saying it. Clearly he means that we want to eventually get back to a world where terrorists have beat back so much that they don't represent much of a real threat. That's a world I'd like to get to as well. Kerry's problem is that the way he wants to get there isn't going to work.

Agreed Kerry was not misquoted, but it we try to say that Kerry thinks terrorism today is nothing more than a nuisance, we would be accused of distorting what he said.

Several weeks ago, Teresa Heinz Kerry said something to the effect that we should expect to put up with a little terrorism, other countries have been putting up with it for years!
