Brighton – Clare Short, until recently a key member of Tony Blair's government, has likened the struggle faced by Arab insurgents in Iraq with the French resistance to German occupation during the Second World War.
In an exclusive interview with the Gulf News on Tuesday, the former Secretary of State for International Development said she could "understand" why some Arabs are embracing the Islamic militancy preached by groups such as Al Qaida.
She said: "I think the killing of civilians is always wrong, (the Prophet) Mohammad's (PBUH) teachings said it was wrong, but I think the cause is just.
A few minutes later, Short added: "I understand their anger completely. My father came from Northern Ireland and as you know in Irish history, starting off in the resistance to colonialism, there has been a use of force, and I understand the history of Ireland, and I understand why people think 'I can't get justice in any other way'.
"I think it's always wrong to target civilians … because even when you understood the IRA, they never targeted civilians. That's a terrible moral deterioration that's taken place.
"But I understand the anger and the demand for action and it's not good enough for the world to say state violence is okay and non-state violence is not okay.
"The American public fought against British colonialism with violence, the free French fought against German occupation with violence, the Palestinian people are entitled to resist occupation I mean, it's in international law [and] the Iraqi people are entitled [to resist occupation]."

How obtuse can one be when the primary methodology of the "resistance" is the killing, including many innocents, to advance their "cause," which is a terrorist takeover of Iraq.Without terrorism the resistance is lost. The terrorists can not face armies. So how can one be for the cause (the "resistance") but against the terrorism when they are intertwined in Iraq!!

21 July 1972 Bloody Friday. 22 bombs killed 9 and seriously injured 130. 30 years later the IRA officially apologised for this set of attacks.
1974 Guildford pub bombing killed 19 and injured 182. Four people, dubbed the Guildford Four, were convicted for this and were imprisoned with life sentences. 15 years later Lord Lane of the Court of Appeal overturned their convictions noting "the [investigating] officers must have lied".
1974 Birmingham Pub Bombings. Bombs in two pubs killed 19. The Birmingham Six were tried for this and convicted. Many years later, after new evidence of police fabrication and suppression of evidence, their convictions were quashed. Appeals by the Birmingham Six that the read IRA bombers admit their responsibility were ignored.
1975 Balcombe Street siege
1976 The IRA blew up the newly appointed British ambassador to the Republic of Ireland, resulting in a State of Emergency being declared in the Republic. The IRA also threatened to kidnap or kill Irish cabinet ministers and the President of Ireland.
1979 The IRA blow up Earl Mountbatten of Burma, members of his family and a local child off the Irish coast. An appeal by Pope John Paul II during his Irish visit that their campaign of violence end was ignored.
1981 IRA prisoner Bobby Sands, imprisoned in connection with his involvement in a military strike involving a bomb and subsequent gun battle, was elected Member of Parliament in the Northern Ireland constituency of Fermanagh and South Tyrone, after the moderate nationalist Social Democratic and Labour Party decided not to run a candidate, leaving Sands as the main nationalist candidate in the by-election. He had been on a hunger strike for 'Prisoner of War' status for 41 days prior to being elected. He died 23 days later.
1981 The IRA killed Ulster Unionist Party Belfast MP Rev Robert Bradford along with the caretaker of a community centre. Irish Taoiseach Dr. Garret FitzGerald and former taoiseach Charles Haughey condemned the killings in Dáil Éireann. SDLP party leader John Hume accused the Provisional IRA of waging a campaign of "sectarian genocide".
1982 Hyde Park. 2 bombs killed 8 members of the Household Cavalry and Royal Green jackets units performing ceremonial duties in one of the few mainland attacks which targeted soldiers. 7 of their horses were also killed.
1983 Harrods department store bomb during Christmas shopping season killed 6 (3 police) and wounded 90.
1984 Brighton hotel bombing: a bomb in the Grand Hotel killed 5 in a failed attempt to kill members of the British cabinet, including Margaret Thatcher, the Prime Minister.
1987 Enniskillen massacre. Bombing of a Remembrance Day parade killed 11 civilians (including nurse Marie Wilson, whose father Gordon Wilson went on to become a leading campaigner for an end to violence in Northern Ireland) and injured 63. The IRA later claimed that their target was a colour guard of British soldiers. On Remembrance Day 1997, the leader of Sinn Féin, Gerry Adams, formally apologised for the bombing.
1989 10 Royal Marines bandsmen were killed and 22 injured in a bombing of their base in Deal, Kent.
1990 Car bombings in Northern Ireland killed 7 and wounded 37.
1991 2 IRA members were killed by their own bomb in St Albans.
1992 8 Protestant builders killed by an IRA bomb on their way to work at an Army base near Omagh.
1993 IRA bomb in Warrington killed 2 children.
1993 IRA detonated a huge truck bomb in the City of London at Bishopsgate, which killed 2 and caused approximately £350m of damage, including the near destruction of St. Ethelburga's Bishopsgate.
1993 A bomb at a fish and chip shop underneath a UDA office on the Protestant Shankill Road, Belfast went off prematurely and killed 10 people, including 2 children and the bomber.
1996 IRA broke their cease-fire and kill two in a bomb at the Canary Wharf towers in London.
15 June 1996 Manchester bombing by IRA was a 5,000lb bomb which injured 206 people and damaged 70,000 square meters of retail and office space.

The best way to understand the koran is to read it in the order it was given by Muhammad, which is why the life of Muhammad, Ishaq, the oldest and ONLY biography of his life is essential. Not only is it essential in ordering the Koran, the Koran is useless without knowing what Muhammad did and said, and the order of it. For any Muslim to deny Muhammads biography, then they have to deny the koran, because Muhammad IS the koran. All their pagan rock worshipping rituals are what Muhammad adopted from his tribe and are spelled out in his biography. The Koran itself contains no instruction to these rituals, so muslims would not know when to have Ramadan, for example.
Muslims apologists try to discredit alot of this stuff, but they can't. It's the oldest and only account of Muhammad, so good or bad, they have to accept the realities of what Muhammad really was, and that is, he was was no prophet, but a murdering, theiving, raping,lying pedophile. A megalomaniac, simular to Hitler, and John kerry.
All other writers of Muhammads hadith take from Ishaq, and try build on it, or twist it to make it look better. Alot of it is ommited, even though they say the Koran cannot be abrogated.
The most important book to read is Ishaq's Sirat Rasul Allah, The Qur'an can't be understood or followed without it.The Sirat Rasul Allah by Ibn Ishaq, circa 750 A.D., was edited and abridged by Ibn Hisham in 830 and translated by Alfred Guillaume under the title, The Life of Muhammad in 1955 by Oxford Press.
And, it's back in print for those of you interested in the ultimate of Islamic study, which inferiates Muslim clerics to no end. Truth really hurts them.
Also, read The History of al-Tabari was written by Muhammad bin al-Tabari between 870 and 920 A.D. His work was translated and published in 1987-97 by S.U.N.Y. Press.
After that, You need to get "ways of the traveler", which is what Sharia law is based on, or rather, explains sharia law as it is derived from the koran and Muhammad sayings.
You will know more than most Muslims just by reading those three wrtings. And don't think that those are just 3 books either. You are looking at many volumes.
Best,(and cheapest) is to start here, which accurately puts the koran in order for you, and goes through the life of Muhammad, and exposes what Islam and it doctrine really is. After reading this, you will probably want to order those books mentioned above, as I did. They aren't cheap, so if you are low on funds, the library can get them for you, As was the case for Alfred Guillaume's books until they came back into print earlier this year. (969.$$$!!)
