Seems dumb to me - Kerry pledged not to raise taxes on folks making less than 200K, then said he would raise taxes (repeal tax cuts) on those making more than 200K. No contradiction.

Now, I think Kerry would hold to that promise like Clinton held to his promise for a middle class tax cut - but anyone stupid enough to believe Kerry helped balance the budget is dumb enough to believe anything.

Small correction here, Kerry did not say he would repeal the tax cuts on those making over 200K, he and the DNC have CONSISTENTLY made it a campaign theme that they would repeal the Bush tax cut altogether!!!

There is a BIG difference in that! The Bush tax cut affected people in EVERY economic bracket!

"Repealing" that tax cut, or in other words, re-instating and making people pay a tax they're not paying now, is a tax increase. And in this case, a tax increase on Americans even down to the poverty level.

Not really accurate. What Kerry is proposing is repealing the tax cut for the top two brackets. While he pledged not to raise taxes on those earning under $200,000, that proposal could hit certain people earning $80,000. See my post here, John Kerry...Read My Lips

How very Clintonian of him - he could also add a tax and defend it by saying, "I didn't raise your taxes - this is a new tax". Anyway, does anybody have any proof that Kerry missed more votes than any Senator in history?

I think we're talking about what he said last night, not necessarily what may be hidden in the shadows. What he said last night is stupider than what George HW Bush said and was bounced out of office for.

Kerry, from last night: "I want to put money in your pocket. I am -- I have a proposal for a tax cut for all people earning less than the $200,000. The only people affected by my plan are the top income earners of America."

In other words, without spin:

1) The Bush tax cut on earners of more than $200,000 have the tax cut rolled back. This was explicitly stated. (although it doesn't appear in the quote I offered)

2) Those earning less that $200,000 do not have their cut repealed. (this is implicit, from the above)

3) Kerry will also give a tax cut to those making less than $200,000. Read his words again. He said it.

How in hell he could do any of this is beyond me. Anybody who believes it deserves to have him as their president.

If he's elected, this will haunt him for the rest of his stupid life.

I heard that too, but I was in another room and couldn't verify it. If he said it, Bush has WON!!!. No one ever wins an election by promising to raise taxes.

The quote I posted was verbatim from CNN's transcipt. Don't let this one disappear. Get out those VCRs for the debate replay.

Yet right in the middle of his answer, he spoke of repealing the Bush "tax cut." While the Kerry and the DNC hate to admit it, that tax cut extended to Americans into the lowest economic brackets.

Moron. Kerry only said he would repeal the part of the Bush cut applying to those with over 200k/year.

He meant income taxes.

The others would be fair game especially if sold as revenue inhancements or such. Or perhaps tanker port fee or tanker vapor emission fee

Question: Is the tax cut for wagearners making over $200,000 that Kerry wants to repeal in force at this moment in time? I thought it was, but someone I'm debating with elsewhere is suggesting it isn't, therefore the repeal would not qualify as a tax increase.

TIA

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To the dim bulb liberal making the "moron" comment, fact is, repealing the ENTIRE Bush tax cut has been the CENTRAL THEME of the DNC and EVERY democrat politician for over a year. This new and slight "spin" offered last night is just that, spin.
Fact is, they want the WHOLE tax cut repealed, the entire DNC and Kerry / Edwards have been absolutely clear about that for over a year now... The only "waffling" last night was in putting any kind of qualifier on it.
Question: Is the tax cut for wagearners making over $200,000 that Kerry wants to repeal in force at this moment in time?
Currently the top marginal rate is 35%. It was 39.6% in 2000. This tax cut is in effect and was phased in over three years starting in 2001. Kerry is proposing to increase the rate back up to 39.6% again. Kerry is also proposing to increase the 33% bracket up to 36%. This will impact millions of people under $200,000 despite what Kerry said. It is an outright lie for Kerry to say that he will not increase the tax on those people. His numbers for projected revenue include taxing all those people. He could not get the $337 Billion he claims.
