We all know some self made millionaires. I am positive a lot of FReepers fit that category. The ones I know are "The Millionaire Next Door" and you cannot tell their economic status by looking. One couple I know, with a grown son and three older teenage daughters are proud that their kids don't know if mom and dad are multimillionaires or budget-conscious, struggling small business owners. The parents want the girls to learn to work and to have the joy of self-achievement. If there is anything for them when mom and dad are gone, it will be a surprise and a gift, not a birthright.

If I saw THK on the street, I would not have any idea she had a billion dollars, either. You can buy Armani on line at discount, after all. You can buy Ferragammo shoes on eBay if you must have them.

Kerry made a huge gaffe with that class warfare observation and showed himself to be a snob.

Kerry is a snob -- he wouldn't know how to hide it because he doesn't know he is; he just thinks people with money are practically a different (and superior) species from those who have less.

Howie Carr had a great column last Sunday about a speech of Kerry's deploring "suburban sprawl" -- you know, it makes cars necessary and is bad for the environment, blah, blah, blah; Howie noted Kerry's five boats, all the SUVs and Teresa's plane. He ended with a terrific line:

"Vote for Kerry -- he's better than you!"

Maybe at one time you could more than now (though even then not reliably), but not the past 40 years or so. My mechanic told me a story once about a guy he knows who looks and dresses basically like Joe Sixpack -- he went into a car dealership and bought new cars for himself and his four kids -- and paid cash.

I think Miss Manners notes in one of her books that years ago the really top of the line stores learned not to judge potential customers by their appearance.

Like President Bush explained, you don't have to be a millionaire, if you have a Subchapter S corp, to get nailed by Kerry's threat to tax people who have incomes above $200,000. Small businesses provide jobs, and they are not rich fat cats like John F'N and "Step Money", by a long shot.
