December 14, 1995: Teresa Heinz announces a $20 million grant to the Heinz Center in Washington, DC; Enron CEO Ken Lay will be among the Board members.
Pittsbugh Post-Gazette, 12-15-1995: "The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment holds special significance for Teresa Heinz. ... 'This has been important to do for quite awhile. [Late Sen. John Heinz] was pushing it so hard, and this is the capstone for that vision,' Heinz said before yesterday's announcement that a $20 million grant from the Vira Heinz Endowment will finally bring the center to life. ... In addition to Heinz, the center's board of directors includes John Sawhill, president and chief executive officer of The Nature Conservancy, who will be chairman; Environmental Defense Fund executive director Fred Krupp; Kenneth Lay, chairman and CEO of Enron Corp.; Simon Levin, director of the Princeton Environmental Institute at Princeton University; Paul O'Neill, chairman and CEO of Alcoa; and Carnegie Mellon University President Robert Mehrabian."

November 2001: Enron collapses
September 23, 2002: Ken Lay dined at Kerry's Georgetown home 10 months after Enron went bankrupt.
New York Times, 7-10-2004: "[M]r. Kerry's wife played host to Mr. Lay at their Washington home almost a year after his company collapsed. Mr. Lay attended a dinner at the Georgetown town house Teresa Heinz Kerry shares with her husband on Sept. 23, 2002, in connection with her philanthropic work related to her first husband. Mr. Lay was one of about 12 trustees attending a board meeting of the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economy and the Environment, said Thomas Lovejoy, the center's president."
2003: Ken Lay remained on the Heinz Center board well after the Enron scandal broke.
Washington Post, 6-27-2003: "Yesterday, self-styled muckraker Bernardo Issel of NonprofitWatch.org told us that the much-maligned Lay has been a longtime member of the board of trustees of the Heinz Center, an environmental group founded by the candidate's wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry. She's the group's vice chairman, and Lay left the small board earlier this year after serving for nearly a decade."
Heinz philanthropy spokesperson defended Lay's environmental credentials.
Washington Post, 6-27-2003: "The Kerry campaign directed us to Chris Black, communications director of the Heinz Family Philanthropies. Black acknowledged Lay's participation and his status as a corporate 'boogeyman.' But she added: 'Whatever troubles he had at Enron, Ken Lay had a good reputation in the environmental community for being a businessman who was environmentally sensitive. When someone does wrong in one part of their life, it doesn't mean they can't do good in another part of their life.'"
I thought we all hated the earth............
According to Ms. Heinz-Kerry, her late husband did push for an environment study center. Of course, she also used to be a republican.
