I predict a division among Freepers on this post. Some will offer up their civil rights to "protect America," while others will point out that their civil rights are inviolable.
This is one of the key issues, along with second amendment issues that divides the members of the Free Republic community.
You will see all sorts of comments in this thread, some of which you won't believe came from a conservative.

I will not surrender my freedom in the name of security, because without the former, the latter does not exist, but I will say this: consider the source.
Civil liberties and immigrant rights advocates say ...
What does that mean? These so-called advocates could represent the most extreme of Marxist or other nutball groups. They even could represent pro-Islamic terror groups. Until I'm satisfied this comes from a legitimate source, I'll take these dire warnings with a grain of salt.

There is at least one more alternative view of the problem: there are no longer civil liberties to give up. If my government has allowed special groups to threaten and kill me with impunity, I don't need to fear the central government. The results are the same.

Sadly, I agree with your take on this. Unfortunately, most of the libertarians and Buchannan type "paleo-conservatives" (who voted FOR Bush in 2000) have long since FR, especially since the aftermath of 9/11. Many of them were either banned, or driven away by some of the neo-con trolls and Bush/Cheney campaign Kool Aid drinking posters here.
