(IsraelNN.com) An explosion occurred a short time ago in the Taba Hilton, on the Egyptian side of the border. According preliminary reports from Magen David Adom emergency medical service officials, the cause of the blast was a gas tank.
There are unconfirmed reports of dozens of injured. The IDF has already ordered helicopters into the air and MDA is mobilizing to treat the many wounded in the blast. Details to follow as they become available.
At least 42 injured Israelis have so far arrived at Israeli hospital in Eilat.
US should cut aid to Egypt (and I have always said this, regardless of this attack today).
Yawn. How does destroying world heritage sites that are thousands of years old do anything? You suffer the same logic that the talliban used to blow up Buddhist statues.
IDF radio: Reporter at the border saying rescue forces impeded by Egypt. Israel has to persuade Egypt for every vehicle it wants entered. Lots of time being wasted on Egyptian inactivity. This has been happening for almost 2 hours with Egyptian inaction. Egypt has border almost 100% closed.
Taba is the border crossing, about 6 mile from Eilat, into Egypt. Other than the Taba hilton and a few other hotels, there isn't much there. Once in Egypt, a highway stretches from east Taba to Sharm el Sheik (a Red Sea resort town frequented mostly by Europeans, the scuba diving is some of the best in the world). Egypt doesn't have any facilities anywhere close that can handle this. As a matter of fact, if you have a diving accident in Sharm el Sheik, you had to be air-evacted to the decompression chamber in Eilat (at least when I was there). There are some UN border watching stations within the area, but they aren't equipped for this either.
it has always been of my opinion that Israel should never have given back the Sinai!!!
I have to get a hold of my cousin who lives in Eilat
Um, they destroy our people and heritage sites you know, it's simply payback. Also, demonic cult places like mecca aren't 'heritage'.
Actually I expect the POS Powell&Co to tell Israel not to do anything, and let the Egyptians handle it. The State Department should have been shut down years ago.
IDF radio: other explosions heard are still being investigated.
Israeli Security Forces: terrorist car bomb did it. Engine of car inside lobby of hotel
Egypt: It was a gas leak
Once in Egypt a highway stretches WEST from Taba to Sharm el Sheik.
I worry about me sometimes......
The comments were about destroying the Pyramids in Egypt.
Then it damn well had better be President Bush on the phone to Mubarak, telling him that Egypt doesn't get a dime more of our money unless that border is opened. People are dying--but Egyptians may not consider Israelis to be human.
Well.. I'm not sure I'd want to destroy them, but it would be nice to get rid of cairo.
"blow up the pyramids" ??
Sheeeeesh
IDF radio: "nightmare in Sinai"
Egypt clearly has a security problem. Not allowing Israeli rescue forces to enter the hotel...well, presumably to do so would indicate Egypt's rescue forces weren't up to snuff. Still, people suffer while bureaucrats bicker. Not good.
Obviously you have never been there. Most of the research and funding for the historical sites in Egypt comes from outside of the country.
There are reportedly celebrations in Gaza and in Cairo
I hope the next thing we hear is "There are reportedly EXPLOSIONS in Gaza and Cairo"...
