LONDON (Reuters) - Many pop stars rebel against authority and challenge the establishment -- but not British boy band Busted who have voiced their support for the struggling opposition Conservative Party. The Busted trio, James Bourne 21, Matt Jay, 21 and Charlie Simpson 19, declared their political leanings in an interview with Tatler magazine.
"I don't really like talking about politics but I've always grown up with their views -- the Tories' way of doing things. I just prefer it," Simpson said in the interview which will hit news stands on October 16.
The success of the band has swayed at least one member.
"From the financial position I am in now, I am a f*****g Tory boy too," said Jay.
Whether the singers' declaration will help the Conservatives, trailing in the polls ahead of an expected election next year, is unclear -- many Busted fans are too young to vote.
I take it being a Tory Boy in the UK goes against the pop star grain. Shades of the Ramones here in the US?
No, many pop stars are sheep who do, say, and think what all the other pop stars and entertainment figures do. I don't know anything about Busted, but they earned a little bit of respect from me.
