I agree, unfortunately the game is played by imperfect albeit well-paid human beings who are subject to being deked. Again, IMHO, if they execute the relay better, if LeCroy throws to the plate instead of up the line they still have a shot at Jeter.
It wasn't a completely irrational gamble, though. Even though I'm a Yankees fan, I still think the Twins have a very good shot at winning this. Santana is a lock. End of story, no debate. They just need one of the other two games.
Just how much "courage" does it take to root for the Yankees. Check out their payroll against that of the Twins.
Bottom line. You can buy your way to a championship a hell of a lot faster than you can work to a championship.
Bottom line #2: The Yankees suck.
No coherent relationship?
THE FANS are DEMS.
The dems insist on questioning the integrity of Bush/Cheney.
That is simply not a workable proposition in the post 9/11 world.
I don't want to be cheering for any team whose FANS are mostly DEMS.
The dems are out to destroy this country. We have to draw the battle lines, and SPORT is not EXCLUDED.
It was a sucker's bet, unfortunately. Nathan is probably gassed for game three as well and with Silva pitching the Twins will need their bullpen.
Gardenhire has no idea how to handle a playoff pitching staff, as evidenced by his leaving Kenny Rogers in the pen during last season's series.
You mean the 26-time World Champion Yankees suck? Well then that must be a good thing!!
I see your point. I guess it's just the aura of the Yankees or whatever, and it's probably why I'd never succeed as a major league manager, but I'd probably be more prone to roll the dice against those jokers because of the way, not just this year but for the last 50 years, they constantly seem to pull victories out of their tail. It's not enough to try to beat them, you've got to try to drive a stake through their hearts and ring their dugout with garlic blossoms to make sure. I think this is potentially devastating to the Twins, because even though they'd probably have been thrilled to come out of N.Y. with a split going in, the way this game turned out has to be a big momentum shift and psychological blow.
The Twins fans are Dems too. Last time Minnesota went GOP was 1972. Do you root for both teams to lose?
Exactly correct. There are good and bad ways to lose baseball games. This was a loss of the worst possible kind for the Twins.
Hopefully home cooking will help repair some of the damage done to us by #35 tonight. He's got some real explaining to do. I gotta stay optimistic because they still have to beat us on our field but there's no doubt the better manager is in the Yankee dugout.
Speak for yourself :)
Well said on all accounts. Now, being a Yankees fan in the 80s... THERE'S courage.
Oh good grief, I'm sorry, I'm as committed to the conservative cause as anyone who posts here and have been for more than three decades, but I'm simply not going to check past presidential results to choose which sports teams I'm going to pull for.
I hear you, Col. I'm a right wing Yankees fan, which isn't such a rare species. But I have a lot of admiration for the Twins. They are a hard-nosed, disciplined team. Now when does Torii Hunter's contract expire so I can let George know?:)
No kidding, that's a bit extreme.
Thanks for posting this. I love the Yankees.
I DO NOT ROOT FOR OR CONDONE ANY SPORTS TEAMS WHOSE FAN BASE IS PREDOMINANTLY DEMOCRATIC.
Would you root for a team whose fans were mostly terrorists?
Dems=terrorists. That's the equation. I can't see beyond that. If that means no baseball, no baseball. This is a civil war, people.
Yankees: the Microsoft of baseball. Embrace (your opponents best players), extend, and spend enough money to fund a small country just to squash any possibility of real competition by your opponents.
I think I've *finally* keyed in to why I really hate the Yankees with such passion...
But i read on FR the Yankees would get swept!
Hunter is locked up long-term, and hopefully Santana will be soon. Our main drawback, if you haven't guessed from my prolonged venting, manages our team.
It's darned annoying to support a team for 35 seasons, live and die with them for seven months and then see this happen. All credit to the Yankees - they came back and they deserve the highest accolade for it - but Nathan pitching a third inning was sheer lunacy.
Well, under your formula, there would be almost no professional sports team you could root for, because they are almost all in major metro areas, almost all of which vote Democratic. They would have to put a team in the middle of Nebraska or Idaho for a Republican to root for.
