U.N. staff associations call for withdrawal of U.N. staff from Iraq because of high security risk

Two organizations representing more than 60,000 United Nations staff members urged Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday to pull all U.N. staff out of Iraq because of the "unprecedented" risk to their safety and security.

In a joint letter to Annan, the staff organizations cited a dramatic escalation in attacks in Iraq and said the United Nations regrettably "has become a direct target, one that is particularly prone to attacks by ruthless extremist terrorist factions."

"Just one staff member is one staff member too many in Iraq," they said. "We ... appeal to your good judgment to ensure that no further staff members be sent to Iraq and that those already deployed be instructed to leave as soon as possible."

Annan pulled all U.N. international staff out of Iraq a year ago, following two bombings at U.N. headquarters in Baghdad and a spate of attacks on humanitarian workers.

Good Plan.

While they're at it, they should withdraw from Israel and the USA.

Yep, these are the folks that John Kerry and John Edwards think we need to have more involved in Iraq.

Yep And don't let the door hit your A$$ on the way out.

Funny how the hard core left keeps such faith in an organization that runs the minute things look a little difficult.

According to Kedwards, it's Bush's fault their running away. The UN has a clear agenda either for the elections to fail, or to argue that they were merely an American set up and therefore not legitimate. You mark my words.

This is to be expected; the United Nations only go to and give parties - or use other peoples money and military for their extraordinary </sarcasm> efforts in the world.

Its OK for the UN to protect and defend terrorists around the world, but when one of them gets a boo-boo on his finger in Iraq, they prepare to cut and run like girlie-men cowards.

Oh yeah.. I forgot.. these are the maggots Kerry wants to entrust with the defense of the American homeland.

Wonderful.

The timing of this is suspicious.

Couldn't be more transparent if they sent along a set of instructions. Help Kerry by sabotaging the January Iraqi elections.

Why we asked the UN to organize a democratic election when we know they are our enemies is beyond me.

Better send Jimmuh...

...and said the United Nations regrettably "has become a direct target, one that is particularly prone to attacks by ruthless extremist terrorist factions."

Was this a response to the US complaints of a corrupt UN in the Oil for Bribes scandal?

Get the US out of the UN now and get the UN out of the US...

Understandable move, With all them Yankee troopers standing about, it is hard for UNers to demand/extort bribes from locals. Sure, many UNers got fat pocketing what Saddam slipped them, but those days are gone. No point keeping UNers where they can't make any money. Pickings are much better, for example, in selling Sudanese food aid in the black market, aids medications in the black market or just looking the other way as Mugabe's thugs loot white property. Kofi and his son still have big expenses, a fact that the US simply didn't consider when it turned off Saddam's cash!

"pull all U.N. staff out of Iraq"

Good. It means fewer forces hostile to the US operating in Iraq.

The UN pulls out of Iraq, then they have proven themselves to be useless. Shut them down.

The U.N COULD protect its own with, dare I say it, their own soldiers....you know, the guys with the blue helmets?

Maybe they can redirect them to Kosovo so we can bring back some of our troops.
