Welcome home. Your mother was like my mother; that "poor, rich" thing is all a residual and unexamined memory from the Great Depression. That meme is dying.

The answer to poverty is the same now as it has been since the dawn of time: work and education. The Federal Government has no special wisdom about these things, and so all it can do is take wealth away from one person and hand it to another, thus addicting the recipient to poverty. Some compassions are disguised cruelty.

Welcome home.

Your journey is common.

Much like may family, we grew up democrat because they were for the working people and Republicans were for the rich. However, my family liked Reagan and even went over to vote for him. Some never returned as they saw the democrat party drift away from things like patriotism, family, religion, and national defense issues.

I voted for Klinton in 92' - my first time I could vote. I was in college and had been bombarded with images of Klinton and JFK and bought the line that he was for the middle class. Of course, the propaganda you get in college is overwhelming. By 94' I had become a Rush listener and voted in the 94' Revolution, which was quite odd for college student. Since then I have never looked back.

Now that you are back on planet earth, you will see how one-sided things are presented by the media. You soon will start figuring out that a lot of people have know idea what the heck they are talking about.
My advice is to stand your ground and take them on with the facts.
The liberal argument never stands up to the cold-hard facts.

You will also find yourself making better decisions in your own life. Primarliy because you will make decisions base on logic instead of emotion.

Just wanted to introduce myself, I stumbled on this place quite by accident and am quite pleased that I did.

I was a Democrat all my life, and voted as such since the time I was 18. I wasn’t really into politics; I just voted Democrat all the way down the line because my mom always said, and “The Democrats are for the poor people, and the Republicans are for the rich, and that’s what my mother told me".

I voted for Clinton TWICE!! (This is where I am hanging my head) 9-11 was a real wake up call for me. I started getting a real interest in what was going on around me.

I stumbled on to Rush Limbaugh on day on my way home, I started questioning exactly what side I was on. I liked and agreed with what Rush had to say.

I didnt know what the differances were really. I am so proud to say that I have figured out that I am a Conservative Republican.

My mother and I still go round and round now that she see's I have gone over to the other side. I recently also discovered Sean Hannity, whom I just LOVE. I only watch Fox News now because it IS fair and balanced.

What a wonderfull time to be alive, I never thought I would see such a political race that has gone the way it has. I am REALLY excited to finally see the "silent" majority waking up finally and speaking their minds and dusting off their boxing gloves.

Any way, glad to meet you all and look forward to discussions!

Welcome to FR and welcome home Cindy. it's so nice to see people really thinking about things seriously and Iam glad your here.
I go around daily with my inlaws who live in our home. they just end up yelling and calling my hubby and I names and such but I wont stop speaking the truth to them, although we have made a vow not to discuss politics at this time because noone's mind will be changed on either side.
Iam proud to be a conservative and i do not always agree with the President, I dont always agree with my hubby either but we compromise and debate and sometimes just move on. But our President cares about all Americans and is doing his level best to keep the united states safe and free from the terrorists who would kill us,and IMO this is the number one issue of our time!
again glad your here and hope to see you around in the forums!!

Welcome Cindy. Your story sounds a little like the opposite of me and my Mom.

I too use to be a little on the Democratic side (even though I never voted) because I too thought they were for the poor. Actually they are! They want to keep people poor.

However, my husband helped me to start seeing how their (Dems) policy kept people poor and possibly helped to make more of us poor, etc. And, that started me thinking and paying attention. I registered Republican and vote most of the time that way. However, should someone like Zell Miller run, I'd vote Dem that time!

So, my Mom and I didn't see eye to eye about Clinton. At the time she could see nothing he did wrong. I never pressured her to change, but pointed out why I didn't agree with Dem policy.

My Mom, as you, discovered FoxNews and is now singing a different tune. Unfortunately she is not voting this year. I of course told her how vital every vote was in order to keep Kerry out!

And, now you are Hannitized as Sean says! Plus, FReeRepublic will keep you informed.

I've run across people in real life that, like you, have begun questioning what they believe.
Others have begun questioning what their party stands for.
They heard Janeane Garafolo say her bit about showing and acts of patriotism making her sick, and they were sorely disappointed when they were told by Democrat pols that they had to shut up and tolerate it, that it's Janeane's 'first amendment right' to say that.
When they asked about their first amendment rights, they got slammed.

Kick back and relax.
Unwind and laugh a little.
You've got alot of time ahead of you to peruse threads and soak up info.

BTW...I love Fox and talk radio as well, but I advise watching all the news sources (until you're about to throw up, anyway). We have to know what the MSM/Libs (same thing) are up to and call them on it...stay informed!

You're about to take one helluva ride. You've just learned the truth about yourself, and the things you've been fed most of your life. Now, you've sloughed off the scales from your eyes, and what a world awaits you.

I'm new to Free Republic as well. Being an older guy I made the switch at 39 from Democrat to Republican in 1987 during the Iran Contra hearings when I figured out {pre talk radio, the internet, the new media} that the media had been feeding me a Left wing agenda all my life. I saw Dan Rather and others for what they were for the first time. I saw their agenda was anti anything Republican and reflected back and realized how I had been duped by these "journalists".

I'm thinking Iran Conta........lets see, we're trying to get hostages and we're fighting Communism in Central America, thats a good thing. When Oliver North stood straight and proudly took the oath {and a bullet for the team} I changed right there and then.

For decades I thought Walter Cronkite was my wise uncle. I had questions being in the military {USAF} during VN but figured, so I disagree with him one time.

It was media bias that moved me from Democrat to Republican.

"The Democrats are for the poor people, and the Republicans are for the rich ..."

The comeback for that statement is "Which would you rather be, rich or poor?" Remember, the DemocRATs have a vested interest in you being the latter.

Welcome home.
