Some skeptics in hearing on allowing foreign-born presidents

WASHINGTON - A Senate hearing on a proposed constitutional amendment to permit foreign-born citizens like Arnold Schwarzenegger to run for president demonstrated many things Tuesday, including that it's a bigger issue than the governor.

Some Democrats and Republicans backed the amendment. Others expressed deep skepticism. But bridging the gap between them was the suggestion that whatever is done, it probably should not apply to current politicians.

Only once was Schwarzenegger mentioned by name in the two-hour Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, and then by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach, in a passing reference.

"The hearing would not be complete if the name of Arnold Schwarzenegger was not mentioned once," said Rohrabacher, who recently introduced a House bill to lift the constitutional ban on foreign-born presidents.

Later, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California's senior Democratic senator, also referred to the governor but only to emphasize that no one had approached her about the need to change the constitution for him.

Feinstein joined Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, in declaring themselves skeptics on the issue. Feinstein said the consequence of the provision was that her foreign-born mother could not run for president, but that might not have been bad.

"I'm not sure it's damaging to go through that first generation," she said.

But Feinstein said she hasn't made up her mind on the constitutional amendment, which she said isn't going to move anytime soon anyway.

Your questions have been answered, you just didn't like the answers. Typical of "you people".

I misunderestimated you though. I am now convinced you are a pseudo intellectual half witt socialist.

You haven't answered a thing. You don't know jack about the Constitution.

You don't like foreign nationals. Well gollee, Bamaboy, there's a surprise from America's little "Third World craphole" No wonder you wanna freeze the Constitution in time, that's when "them coloreds" knew their place and your state wasn't the 49th worst performer in the USA in terms of poverty, education, healthcare, infant mortality and economic vitality. You are in last place in damn near every measure of health, prosperity and well being in the United States of America. But ... it's them forigners that's problem like! Like the Yanks did to y'all in the Civil War!

I spent a good deal of time in your state supporting BellSouth sales reps out of Birmingham, and I was a frequent traveler to Huntsville as a vendor and customer to Adtran. I'll never forget a flood-forced detour I was forced to make traveling form Huntsville to Birmingham via Gasden. I've seen better housing and conditions outside Sao Paulo, Brazil. I'll bet there are still good old boys driving around aimlessly tonight confused after the Talladega race Sunday.

You guys need to be force fed a "Living Document". We should empty your state and fill it with foreign nationals, it'd be better for the American group. Judge Moore told me so.

BTW, I live in Minnesota to set up your rebuttal. Lay it on me Buford, we're going Conservative and our kids can read, we have teeth, and our folks aren't falling over dead at age 50.

1. We are not a nation of Immigrants. 1/2 of the population are descended from people who were here when the Constitution was written.
2. We are a nation with values, a polity, and a heritage that is worth CONSERVING. We do a suicidally poor job of assimilating immigrants. The last thing we need is a president who cannot sing "My Country Tis of Thee" without irony.

I wish we would have been there to grab your dingy kin when they stumbled off the boat and dumped them back into the sea.

See how the bigotry works? You don't have to be better, you have to be first.

Sorry, you lose. But that's something you probably understand.

LOL! You are a hate filled one that's for sure.

The same attitude that is exhibited at DU.
If you will excuse me, I have to get busy and spread the word here at FR.

ATTENTION!!

All FReepers who live south of the Mason/Dixon line must immediately stop posting and report to Comrade Barlowmaker for indoctrination. Those who submit to his will can move freely about the country. Anyone who doesn't have enough sense to understand his rules will be shot, survivors will be shot again. Later, Tater.

When the politicians currently in office start considering outsourcing the presidency, it is a signal that we should 'clean house' on both sides of the aisle!!!

This Contitution not being a "living document" stuff is idiocy.

Al Gore emphatically agrees with you.

They okayed a foreign born nationalized citizen for the job, as long as he was naturalized by 1787 and had been there 14 years.

The "Alexander Hamilton" clause.

all this 'President Soros' 'President Annan' stuff is nonsense. You would have to be an American citizen for 25 to 30 years. And to become a citizen you have to have residency for 5 or 6 years don't you? And to be elected President you have to have some sort of background...VP, governor, Senator...this is not a call to make the office avaiable to 'foreigners'. Naturalized citizens are no longer foreigners. the Presidency should be open to all American citizens. Just like every other govermental office is.

Why do you even bother denying that you're Arne Fufkin when you do such a $hitty job of covering it up?

I wish we would have been there to grab your dingy kin when they stumbled off the boat and dumped them back into the sea.
They took planes in 1966 and 1969.
They came here legally.
My father is/was a physician and my mother was married to an American.

See how the bigotry works? You don't have to be better, you have to be first.
So nationalism is bigotry. Thus nation=hate?
Silly leftist deconstructionism.

Sorry, you lose. But that's something you probably understand.
No raspberry?
