PRESIDENT BUSH has already managed to lose the second debate with John Kerry -- the high-stakes argument over what happened in the first debate.
Dick Cheney can halt the slide tonight, and Bush himself can just as easily reverse it in St. Louis on Friday, but the steeper hill they face is one of their own making.
The Bush campaign put all of its post-Coral Gables eggs in one basket, called the Kerry Doctrine -- a made-up, cartoon version of the senator's foreign policy views. By contrast, Kerry was able to keep the debate going about credibility in the wars (which he finally managed to separate) inside Iraq and against terrorism worldwide, while focusing on the domestic policy themes that will be more prominent in the days ahead.
The "Kerry Doctrine" is classic Bush campaign think -- the belief that in the modern age of electronic communication and short attention spans, enough money and enough repetition can create any image, even a position that unlucky target does not hold.

But seriously, does this guy have a point? Or is he blowing smoke to help Kerry's butt?
Opinions anyone?
Look at the polls that came out yesterday. I don't think the American people like the Kerry doctrine.
The fact kerry's #1 fan has to write a column about it to defend it means the global test commercial is working.
This shouldn't be posted without a large BARF alert. Oliphant has carried Kerry's water for years. He is prime example of "elite" media.
"the belief that in the modern age of electronic communication and short attention spans, enough money and enough repetition can create any image, even a position that unlucky target does not hold."
As if Kerry doesn't do it too.
Here is the best quote I have found concerning Kerry's explaining his debate remark. This is posted on CNN
"But I can do a better job of protecting America's security because the test that I was talking about was a test of legitimacy, not just in the globe, but elsewhere.
By elsewhere, he has to mean "outerspace beings."
Something else...Kerry is definitely on the defensive about this.
Quick somebody post the oliphant picture...
In your dreams Eliphant wannabe. If Bush is in a slide why is he only down SIX points in CALIFORNIA in a poll taken through Oct 3rd? This was announced today on Inside Politics with Judy Woodruff.
When you have to "prove" legitimacy to biased anti-American UN and France, then passing a "global test" is subjecting actions taken in America's defense to foreign powers. Just the fact that John Kerry speaking extemporaneously thinks in terms of something like a "global test" as opposed to our doing what is in our interests and which we think is right according to our notions of right and wrong (and not other peoples') is scary enough.
Here's another example where Oliphant wants it to be a mistake. If it were a real mistake I doubt he'd be spinning so hard. It's all about instincts. Global Test is instinctively a smack in the American face.
"Hell, here's another Kerry syncophant".
You had it right to start with. Consider the source and nothing else. Kerry's debate performance was a disaster and he'll lose this election as a result of it and other problems. The Boston Globe is attempting to revise the facts, they want to say that GLOBAL TEST didn't come out of Kerry's mouth. Of course it did come out of his mouth. So did unilateral nuclear disarmament, free nukes for the mulas, dump the allies when dealing with the N Korean commies and other such foreign policy gaffs that he'll never live down the first debate.
I seriously didn't know that Oliphant has carried water for Kerry for years.
I guess it makes sense considering it is the Boston Globe after all.
You are correct. I should have turned this into a Barf Alert!
The word Oliphant is an automatic barf alert.
"Is the "Global Test" Issue a Failure For Bush?"
Actually, Kerry is too smart for Dubya...
seeing how Kerry has raised the ante to a "Cosmic Test"

He certainly is, as are his sycophants.
Really? did she mention any other states?
Nuff said.
"But seriously, does this guy have a point? Or is he blowing smoke to help Kerry's butt?"
The latter.
I live in MA and believe me this paper could easily carry the masthead reading PRAVDA as the Globe.
Kerry said what he said and he clearly implied that we needed to 'convince' the rest of the world before we defended ourselves. Some one should ask Kerry what would happen if the Euroweenies DIDN'T agree with our decision on preemption? How much time does this lunatic want to spend trying to convince another country that WE are in danger and want to preempt that danger?
Remember also that this is the man who said in the 1970's that he thought the American military should never be used unless it was sanctioned by and under the control of the UN.
"Kerry made statements that our military should be under United Nations control to be dispersed around the world at the organizations whim."
