05 October 2004

Police for now are not sure whether to classify the 62 year-old Khabarovsk resident's actions as self-defense or murder

The thief died on the spot. The squash also suffered.

Sixty-two year old Viktor Shakalov had gone to walk the dog and left he door to his apartment unlocked. When he returned, he saw that someone was rummaging through his apartment. Catching this thief in the act, the retiree was downright angry. The thief, however, decided that the best defense was an attack, and jumped the apartment owner. In reply, the retiree applied a beating with a sack which was laying nearby, containing a summer squash. And overdid it: he stopped only after the thief ceased moving. Just in case, Shakalov tied up the man who lay motionless on the floor, and only afterwards did he call for an ambulance and the police. The thief died sometime before the arrival of the doctors.

Viktor Shakalov now assures everyone that he was just defending himself.

"Now this grandfather is giving statements (to the police)," 'KP' was informed by the Khabarovsk police department. "The difficulty is that we have only the retiree's word. Therefore, it's not yet clear how we will classify this incident - as murder or as self-defense."

Seems I was right when I told my mom (as a child) that squash was deadly.

Chicago residence should take note. Because that's what they are left with, squash, in order to defend themselves and their property.

Life imitates art: about 70 yrs ago Russian absurdist writer Daniil Kharms wrote a short piece where one character killed another by hitting him on the head with a cucumber. Truly there's nothing new under the sun.

Yeah, clearly having the burglar's word would change everything. Is this guy some liberal Democrat who escaped from New York? ;)
