The Men Who Would Be Veep
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 5, 2004 | STEPHEN F. HAYES

[T]he participants in the vice presidential debate this evening are opposites. Dick Cheney... speaks in short declarative sentences and uses few unnecessary words. And he prefers to conduct the affairs of state in private.

John Edwards, by contrast, has been an elected official for only six years. Few expect that his meteoric rise in politics will end if he and John Kerry lose this race. Sen. Edwards... is a loquacious lawyer who has made millions as a direct result of his ability to tell stories. And he's not afraid to lay it on thick.

In 1985, Mr. Edwards channeled a young client with brain damage for a North Carolina jury. "She speaks to you through me," he said....

Sen. Edwards is either a populist, if you like him, or a class-warfare specialist, if you don't. He spent most of the Democratic primary season highlighting something he called "Two Americas."

...Sen. Kerry had in mind these speeches to these audiences when he selected Mr. Edwards as his running mate. It was a conventional-wisdom choice and one that had been urged quite publicly by the heavyweights in Kerry's party. The Massachusetts senator was perceived as a weak campaigner; Edwards was a strong campaigner....

Mr. Bush picked Mr. Cheney despite -- not because of -- the political implications....

For all of their differences, Messrs. Edwards and Cheney had strikingly similar views on the global war on terror.... Sen. Edwards was calling Saddam Hussein an "imminent threat." ..."I think Iraq is the most serious and imminent threat to our country."

..."We know that for at least 20 years, Saddam Hussein has obsessively sought weapons of mass destruction through every means available.... Each day he inches closer to his longtime goal of nuclear capability -- a capability that could be less than a year away."...

It will be interesting to see how this one turns out, not that it has any significant impact on the president-o-meter.

Expectations are that Cheney's style and experience should cause him to eat young Edwards as an after dinner snack and barely notice him. We'll see if he lives up to expectations or softens his approach to allow Mr. Edwards to limp away.

Chances are that Dick Cheney has every quote that the Phony Pony and his running mate have ever made, and all sorts of statistics about Edwards' legal career and voting record, stored in that voluminous and admirable mind. I hope he gets the chance to share some of that information with America tonight.

Yea brother (or sister, as the case may be)!!! I don't doubt that Cheney is capable of handing Edwards' head to him several times without Edwatds even realizing that he did it. My concern is that the RNC will try to keep Cheney reined in.

But, I agree with you . . . . IN SPADES!!!!! I want to see Edwards crawling on his hands and knees in tears when the debate ends. We need a clear and decisive victory to shut down the Kerry Lie Machine.

Well, my screen name is JustaCowgirl, so which do you think, LOL!

I think the only thing that will keep Cheney reined in is concern about his health and not getting too stressed out. I imagine the RNC would love to see Cheney rip the Pony's rotten little head off and throw it into the audience. (nice imagery there, huh - I'm not mad at this punk or anything!)

Well, nothing is going to shut down the Lie and Nasty Rhetoric Machine. But seeing Edwards get what he deserves would be a nice boost, no doubt.
