Expert connects Scott Peterson's fishing route to location of unborn son's remains

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — An expert in San Francisco Bay currents linked the route of Scott Peterson's Christmas Eve fishing trip to the location of his unborn son's body Monday.

Ralph Cheng, a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said his study of wind and tides indicated a "high probability" that the baby's remains washed ashore from an area directly between the marina where Peterson launched his boat and the small island where he fished.

"It's almost right in the middle of Berkeley Marina and Brooks Island," Cheng told jurors at Peterson's capital murder trial.

The prosecution witness, however, acknowledged he had never performed such an analysis before and was unable to determine a similar path to shore for the remains of Peterson's wife, Laci.

Trial by computer: Digital evidence not always as reliable as it seems

You can tell a lot about a person from his or her computer hard drive, toll-booth pass, or TiVo account.

More difficult to ascertain from a computer forensic analyst's perspective, however, is the reliability of the information that's revealed.

Prosecutors trying Alejandro Avila for the rape and murder of 6-year-old Samantha Runnion in California hope to bolster their case by introducing evidence of child pornography allegedly found on his computer hard drive.

In Scott Peterson's double-murder trial, prosecutors hope patterns exhibited by electronic records such as GPS data from the defendant's car and cell phone, wiretaps of phone conversations with his mistress, and Internet history files from his personal and business computers will provide jurors with enough circumstantial evidence to imply a motive.

Group's T-shirts 'lynch' Peterson

Six Castro Valley women don clothing showing murder defendant with a noose around his neck

REDWOOD CITY -- The Peterson trial, now in its 19th week, has brought out all kinds. The spectators are sometimes as interesting as the spectacle.

But even the most jaded journalists and court employees were surprised on Monday when six women from Castro Valley appeared in homemade T-shirts showing Scott Peterson with a noose around his neck.

They didn't go inside the courtroom. They stood around outside for awhile, then went and got coffee.

"We think he's guilty, and we want justice to be served," said Margo Dameral, a member of the group.

Asked about her shirt, Dameral said, "We downloaded (Scott's) mugshot from the Internet, then my husband drew the noose around his neck. ... I think it's a good likeness."

Peterson Bought Car Using Different Name

REDWOOD CITY (BCN) -- Scott Peterson bought a car on April 12, 2003 and told the man he bought it from that his name was Jacqueline Peterson and he had a Florida driver's license, according to testimony today in his double murder trial.

Peterson bought the red Mercedes Benz from Michael Griffin in San Diego six days before he was arrested for the murders of his wife Laci and unborn son.

Peterson put the name Jacqueline Peterson on the registration form, something Griffin said he asked about.

"I said are you buying this car for your wife or someone. He said no, that's my name," Griffin said today.

Peterson told Griffin his situation ........

PETERSON 'COLORED' TRUTH: PALS

October 5, 2004 -- REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — As the prosecution's case against Scott Peterson drew to a close, two of the philandering fertilizer salesman's former best friends testified that the suspected wife-killer lied about changing his hair color.

The witnesses included Mike Richardson, the best man at the wedding of Scott and his murdered wife, Laci; and Aaron Fritz, a friend of Scott's since their freshman year of high school. .......

Admission From Investigator Helps Peterson Case

The lawyer defending Scott Peterson on California murder charges has won an admission from the lead investigator.

Modesto police detective Craig Grogan told jurors at Peterson's trial this week that Peterson seemed relatively uninterested in the progress of the investigation into his wife's murder. Questioned earlier in the week by prosecutors, Grogan said Peterson talked to police only about once a month. But under cross-examination, he conceded it was much more often than that.

Expert in tides takes the stand in Peterson case
Defense attacks hydrologist’s testimony on location of victims

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - An expert on tides and currents testified Monday that the bodies of Laci Peterson and her fetus may have been dumped into San Francisco Bay near the spot where her husband claims to have gone fishing the day of her disappearance.

Ralph Cheng, a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said that based on wind and tidal information, the fetus’ body — whether still inside the mother or not — was put in the bay between Brooks Island and the Berkeley Marina.

Cheng cautioned that that was the “highest probability” location.........

Tidal Expert Traces Likely Path Of Laci's Body

Laci Peterson's body was most likely dumped in San Francisco Bay near the spot where her husband said he went fishing on the day she was reported missing, an expert in the bay's tides and currents testified today.

Ralph Cheng, a hydrologist with the United States Geological Survey, told the jury in Scott Peterson's double-murder trial that his scientific analysis showed that the bodies of Laci Peterson and the Petersons' unborn son likely floated ashore from shallow waters "somewhere between the Berkeley Marina and Brooks Island."

Peterson, 31, told police that on Christmas Eve, 2002, he left his eight-months-pregnant wife at home and drove 90 miles to the Berkeley Marina, where he launched his newly purchased fishing boat. Peterson, who said he was fishing for sturgeon, said he motored the boat north to an island police later determined to be Brooks Island.

Last week of state's case against Peterson

Redwood City, CA, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- An expert on tides testified Monday the body of Laci Peterson was likely dumped into San Francisco Bay in the same area where her husband said he had been fishing.

The testimony by Ralph Cheng of the United States Geological Survey came as the prosecution began what the trial judge said would be the final week of the prosecution's case against Scott Peterson.

Tidal expert could be valuable witness in Peterson case

REDWOOD CITY -- Prosecutors wrapping up their murder case against Scott Peterson have a persuasive piece of evidence left in their arsenal: a hydrologist who can explain how a body dumped in the San Francisco Bay can wash ashore at Point Isabel Regional Shoreline months later. Ralph Cheng, a senior researcher with the U.S. Geological Survey, is expected to say that the tides from Brooks Island -- where Peterson said he was fishing the day his pregnant wife disappeared -- flow directly to the Richmond shore.

The bodies of Laci Peterson and her unborn child were discovered there four and a half months after Laci's disappearance.

Cheng is a key witness for prosecutors, who say Peterson killed his wife and dumped her body in the Bay on Christmas Eve, 2002. .......
