Out of curiosity (I also now live 50 miles away-ish, but was in Colorado for the 1980 one) - did it spit and spew for a while before it blew big-time back then?

I thought I read that somewhere and have it in my mind that the more this spitting goes on, the more likely there could be a bigger one.

Yes, but there is a whole lot less mountain to withstand tremendous pressures, so I don't think there is any way there is going to be anything to even remotely approach the May 18, 1980 eruption. We got absolutely no ash from the 5/18/80 eruption; but some from one of the later and much, much smaller eruptions.
