If he was originally discharged under less than honorable circumstances, and later exonerated by President Carter's order, would he have multiple DD214s, or would there be only one, that would be updated to reflect an honorable discharge? BING!! BING!!
That is the question.
Why was he Honorably Discharged in 1978 during the Carter Administration when his obligated service time would have made him eligible for Honorable Discharge much earlier?

Well, I think I understand the issue a little better now. AFAIK, there is no evidence that Kerry was discharged from the Naval Reserves prior to 1978 (the discharge in 1966 certainly can't be cited as anything other than a normal part of his being commissioned as a Naval Officer - unless, that is, one wishes to claim that he had been discharged prior to showing up for duty in Vietnam).
Additionally, AFAIK, there is no reason given for this late discharge (i.e., the 1978 discharge). According to records I've viewed (from his campaign website), his initial duty commitments would've taken him through 1972.
The simple questions are why was he not discharged until 1978, and why were his trip to Paris and activities with VVAW, which ostensibly occured while he was a USNR Officer, not considered to be violations of the USMCJ?
