The London Financial Times reports that, according to "unnamed diplomats and a Kerry adviser," top EU officials from Germany and the Netherlands are lobbying the Bush Administration to adopt John Kerry's position on Iran and its nuclear program. High-level meetings were held with both the White House and the Kerry campaign last week.
The European proposal offers Iran a guaranteed supply of nuclear fuel for its civilian reactors with all waste products to be returned and closely monitored. Iran would pledge to end development of its own enrichment plants that could be used to make nuclear weapons.
According to the report, White House officials were skeptical, but did not reject the European initiative out-of-hand.
During the debate with President Bush Thursday, Kerry remarked that the U.S. should have given Iran the nuclear fuel it wanted.
"I think the United States should have offered the opportunity to provide the nuclear fuel, test them, see whether or not they were actually looking for it for peaceful purposes," Kerry said. "If they weren't willing to work a deal, then we could have put sanctions together."
"Kerry and the European positions are close in a number of ways," Robert Einhorn of the Center for Strategic and International Studies told Financial Times.
Indeed, one diplomat echoed Kerry's prescription of 'diplomacy' when he told the Financial Times, "The European message was that we cannot let weeks pass before the next deadline without doing something. We need a last-ditch approach, not more pressure, but a mix with a package and incentives."

Flubbed the headline.
EU to White House:
Adopt Kerry Iran plan
The only way we're sending nuclear materials to Iran is via rocket.
unless we elect Kerry of course, then we'll probably give a truckload to the Iranian General that just told their scienties, "If you don't have weapons by March, you're not muslims." (or words to that effect).
Hell it worked for Jimmy Carter and the north Koreans....er um...
Or did they? Do they really want to see our cities burn?
and you better believe I'm shouting
Unfortunately for these idiots, Iran is EVEN dumber and has rejected it according to Reuters.
This plan worked well for the Klintoon administration, just look at North Korea.
Ping.
those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. i am positively nonplussed by the lunacy of these people in face of the North Korean debacle.
Great. Iran has spoken. They intend to incinerate Israel and anyone who stands in their way.
North Korea was on the same plan, thank you Mr. Clinton and Mr. Carter. The plan worked great while the enriched uranium sat in the reactors merrily putting our neutrons and making plutonium. As soon as there was enough plutonium to make bombs the North Koreans quit abiding by the plan and extracted the plutonium and made bombs with it.
GREAT IDEA MR KERRY!!!!!!!!!
There is a certain internal logic to Kerry's plan. By giving the Iranians enough materials to do so, they could conceivably make an error in judgment, and create their own Chernobyl disaster, thereby crippling their entire economy and eliminating themselves as a military threat.
There are a couple glaring inconsistencies in this plan. For one thing, it was probably concocted by the same person who produces the "Spy vs. Spy" feature in Mad Magazine. One assumption, apparently, is that the Iranians are so technologically incompetent that they could not successfully operate an atomic power plant, and their limited judgment would lead inevitably to a "China Syndrome" scenario. The second assumption is that the Iranians would not divert this "gift" of nuclear fuel into a weapons development program, weapons that would then be smuggled out into various venues and used for further terrorist strikes. It is not necessary for the Iranians to have long-range missile technology. All they need is a shipping container and a truck. Or as has been done before, steal or hijack an airplane.
WH to EU:
Liberation was accomplished in 1776
Right, turn Iran into another North Korea, quicker quicker quicker.
Again, EU, if you believe Kerry is going to be elected why are you telling our Orez to enact this plan? Could it be because in your heart you sense Kerry isn't going to win?
US to the E.U.- You might want to check with Iran before you carry the loser's water. Apparently they have no interest in Kerry's proposal!
why should the us sell nuclear fuel to iran...why not let the eu do it???
Isn't this tghe same brilliant thing the Sink Emperor and Mad Halfbright did with the North Koreans? If we did this the Iranians would simply find a way not to return the rods until they'd reprocessed them and removed all the plutonium, which they'd prepare to return to us in the form of exploding bombs.
"...unnamed diplomats and a Kerry adviser"????
Has everyone in the media just completely lost all grasp on reality? Invented news seems to mean more than fact and truth more than ever these days.
