A man wanted in the fatal stabbing of a fan leaving a San Francisco Giants game was arrested Friday attempting to re-enter the United States from Mexico, authorities said.
Rafael Cuevas, 22, of Daly City was taken into custody a week after police in San Francisco issued a warrant for his arrest. He is accused of killing 21-year-old Timothy Griffith (pictured left) on Sept. 17, the night Barry Bonds hit his 700th home run.
Cuevas was traveling with at least two others, including one family member, in a 1987 Ford Bronco when he was discovered during a routine anti-terrorism surveillance check at Nogales, Ariz., about 60 miles south of Tucson, said Roger Maier, a spokesman with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Texas.
Agents noticed he was wanted by California authorities for the homicide investigation and by the FBI for interstate flight. A family member also acknowledged that Cuevas was wanted in California, Maier said. He did not resist arrest.
Jim Collins, an attorney retained by the Cuevas' family, said Cuevas was on his way back to turn himself in. Collins said he had spoken with his client on Wednesday, and was arranging to surrender him to San Francisco authorities Sunday around noon.
"It was his decision," Collins said.
But Kevin Cashman, a San Francisco Police Department captain, said at a news conference that there was no indication at the checkpoint that Cuevas intended to surrender.
"Apparently he tried to bypass that and re-enter the country without surrendering himself," Cashman said.
Collins said Cuevas will not resist extradition to California.
Griffith was killed as he and a group of friends walked to their car in a parking lot near SBC Park. The circumstances are unclear, but his friends said Griffith bumped into a car, leading to a confrontation with a group of people inside.
Griffith was stabbed and one his friends beaten in the ensuing fight.
Yeah, sure he was.
I'm surprised he tried to return to the US, since Mexico typically harbors murderers, rapists, child molesters, etc. The Mexican regime thinks that even life in prison is cruel and unusual punishment for Mexicans who slaughter Americans. The death penalty is, of course, out of the question.
He came back to vote for Kerry.
Some other bum just got arrested. A PD agency in Orange County ran a TRW check on a suspect from a murder 12 years ago. The guy moved into a different state to work.
"Only just looking for honest work" BUMP /sarcasm
The U.S. Immigration office will probably say there are no grounds to hold him and give him a free plane ride across the border.
AKA the "just committing the crimes ordinary citizens won't commit" bump.
As if we don't have enough of our own crime, we need to let additional problems flood across the border. Mr. Vicente Fox needs to get off his well-educated bottom and start creating some jobs in his country. It has coastline, water, sun, natural resources, good people... What's the darn problem? Knock off the corruption, educated your people, and then employ them.
That is the worst crap spin I've ever heard and I puked when I heard GW say it...it sounds just like the Demopuke spin we hear daily.
Republicans have illustrated that they are NOT immune from this PC bullsh*t. However, that was the intent of cultural Marxists. Political Correctness infects BOTH parties and IT IS KILLING AMERICA!!!!
It's a no brainer: America would overwhelmingly support comprehensive immigration reform (read: enforcement of the LAW). Do the right thing, Mr. President.
I didn't support the prescription drug plan, either.
With GW's actions, I do pray for a TRUE conservative to run in 2008. Let's get those RINOs out of Congress.
Let's take our country back! The flag does NOT belong to the Howard Deans of America ;)
BUMP
Just saw that ... I would imagine that quite a few Giants fans provided info. God bless him and God bless his family.
...doing the stabbings Americans are unwilling to do.
Surely not! The infamous, "El Bronco blanco"?
Jim Collins, an attorney retained by the Cuevas' family, said Cuevas was on his way back to turn himself in.
Easy claim, after you're caught. Becoming just as classic as "I was framed!"
Back in 1958, I "learned" in Social Studies that the Mexican government and people valued education, and understood the need. The Plan was implemented, to tackle the national illiteracy level, as a first step to becoming a viable economy.
It was called "Each One, Teach One" on the idea children learning to read at school would teach their illiterate family members as they learned. That would create a teachable population, that would then become employable, leading to development and industry.
I have yet to see concrete results.
I work part time for the Giants, and can't tell you how awful it is to go by and see the tribute to Tim Griffith at the spot he was killed. The Giants had a picute tribute & a moment of silence for him during our last homestand. At least it's a relief to know the killer has been caught!!
I too pray for the family. What a tragic loss.
Nice ballpark, nice setting, pretty "sketchy" neighborhood, to say the least. Gladly paid more money to park closer (learned that one the hard way).
Unfortunately he did not survive. So sorry you had to witness such a terrible tragedy!
Actually the neighborhood is improving immensely. We have a lot of building going on. Condos are going up and along with them retail establishments are moving in such as a beautiful new Borders, a large Safeway as well as many shops and restaurants. Down next to the parking lots a new campus for the University of California at San Francisco is going up including medical buildings. We also have several other business Parks going up which are supposed to be the new home of several biotech companies. A new light rail line is going in on Third St. to accomodate all the new businesses. Hopefully you can get back out here soon to see the improvements! We hope your next trip will provide better memories!!
So sorry you had to witness
Wow ... I can only imagine. I've gotten to know some of the folks (mostly the broadcasters) who have attended the last two Giants cruises ... nice, nice people. I'll bet it's a real family atmosphere.
