The Washington state headquarters for the president's re-election campaign was broken into last night, and police are investigating the theft of three computers from the Bellevue office. Missing are the computers used by the campaign's executive director, the head of the get-out-the-vote effort and one that had been set for delivery to the campaign's Southwest Washington field director, said Jon Seaton, executive director of the state's George W. Bush campaign.
Seaton said data on the computers was backed up and available elsewhere. But, he said, the loss creates a potential security breach about the campaign's so-called 72-hour plan, the Bush get-out-the-vote effort.
"Obviously there's some stuff there we wouldn't want our opposition getting their hands on," Seaton said.
The campaign has spoken about the importance of the 72-hour plan in swing states across the country. Bush campaign officials say it could make the difference in a close election if Republicans are able to make sure their voters get to a polling place on election day and don't sit home as many did four years ago.
Seaton was the first one in the office this morning. He did not notice the break-in until he walked into his office and saw a rock and broken glass on the floor.
A side window of the office on 112-th Ave. N.E. had been smashed.
Seaton said this morning that the campaign staff was still checking to see if anything else had been stolen.
State Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance called it a "Watergate-style break in" and said he suspects Democrats are behind it.
"If you're just some burglar looking for computers to sell to buy drugs you take every laptop in the office maybe," he said. "But they knew exactly whose computers to get. They got the executive director's computer and the get-out-the-vote director's computer."
State Democratic Party spokeswoman Kirstin Brost said Democrats had nothing to do with the break-in.
"I feel really bad. I know how upset I'd be if it happened to us," she said.
"There was nothing for us to gain by stealing those computers. Their secret plan isn't so secret and the fact is we're winning by a lot right now."
Vance said the break in follows reports of vandalized Bush campaign signs and what he said were telephone calls to voters alleging Bush would reinstate a military draft if re-elected.
"To me there is some scary stuff going on from liberal radicals whose Bush hatred is out of control," Vance said.
Man, that took some cohunes to walk through the aptly named Red Square at the Dub in dress blues!
From Q&A on the news.....
Q What ever happened with the investigation into former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, who is said to have removed classified information from the National Archives?
A The Justice Department is continuing to conduct a criminal investigation to determine whether Berger broke federal laws for the handling of classified material. Justice Department spokesman Blain Rethmeier declined to give any further information.
As reported by the New York Times and others, Berger, who was national security adviser to President Bill Clinton, has acknowledged that he took copies of classified documents from a secure reading room at the National Archives last fall when preparing for testimony before the Sept. 11 commission. He also took his notes.
Berger said the removal was a careless mistake, but critics have accused him of stashing documents in his clothing intentionally. Some documents were returned, but some remain missing. Officials at the National Archives have imposed new security measures, including surveillance cameras, for the research rooms.
What the heck are they investigating? Charge him and let a jury decide.
Nah, dumb 18 year old Lance Corporal on recruiter's aide duty.
I asked for directions to a where a some records on a prospect could be found, and took the shortest route.
At the time, the rule was if you went to an educational institution, you wore dress blue bravos.
YES, I was VERY aware of the "casing." VERY.....
At a high school I went to, one of the kids who showed up wore a T-shirt that read "KILL A COMMIE FOR MOMMY." I asked him if he wore it for me and he said no, he had forgotten he had signed up for my visit until they announced it in homeroom that morning. I've always wondered what he would have worn if he had remembered my visit before he left home that day.
Cam Kerry is going to be in Spokane on Monday, I believe, speaking at a local college.
BTW, I hated qualifying with that .45!
Liberals are neither liberal nor tolerant. They are internal enemies in the body politic, a veritable cancer in this Great Republic. They are capable of crimes toward Conservatives and Conservative political parties and interest groups.
Sure, they demonstrate outrage at Nixon's "plumbers" but they have no problem dipping their hand in the "cookie jar" themselves, eh?
I have not checked out this story in full yet. It bears further investigation, but the allegation is really not surprising.
Liberals are truly the most hateful, least tolerant people there are. Amazing that they can look at themselves through such rosy glasses.
Like you and some other previous replies, the first thought in my mind was pretty much an attempt at an historical comparison with Watergate and the "plumbers."
Now, we already know how they (the Plumbers" and Nixon) were excoriated.
Let's see if the Dems are consistent and impartial.... I know it is extremely unlikely, yet it worth a roll of the dice to see if the libs pick up on this and if they express any moral outrage (I know using the word is painful with them, and I wince).
I am not a betting man, yet if I were to plink down some silver, I would bet that there would be no moral (ouch) outrage from the liberal/Left.
HEY! Cease and desist. We must stop all further discussion on this matter until we get a majority vote in the U.N. General ASSembly. The final authorization may be penned by Kerry (if he is not noted as being absent).
Until then, our First Amendment rights will be suspended until further proclamation from the U.N. High Command for the U.S. region. Thank you for your compliance in this Global matter. (UGGG)
Hold on. Is there really a statue of Lenin in the U.S.A., anywhere? Fremont? Do you know if anyone can go there and e-mail a picture of this? Is this for real?
He's a stuffed shirt allright. He would be a regular old holiday turkey, were it not for the nature of the "stuffing." Ouch.
I loved it, hence the screen name.
The new US issue Italian .380 long does not foster any warm or fuzzy feelings in me.
The only time I wanted a pistol in Iraq, I wanted a big hole reliably at short range, not several "what if it works?" smaller holes that were NATO standard or helped streamline the logistical trail.
Yes, there really is a statue of Lenin in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle. Do a 'Net search on it.
When I qualified with the .45, my S-3 told me to take lots of ammo and not to return until I had put enough holes in the target. I came back with the requisite number of holes. Don't ask how many rounds it took, but I essentially did it by firing the first round and then "adjusting" fire using the puffs of dirt kicked up behind the target.
Probably Cameron Kerry and Vallely getting lost and thinking it was the Kerry Campaign Headquarters!
Honestly. I am not just stating that for any reason other than I can't remember how many times I have seen, heard or otherwise witnessed a liberal:
flip out; go ballistic; refuse to listen to logic put forth in a scientific manner; listen to reason in any commonly understood sense of the concept; immediately resort to ad hominem attacks when logic, facts or common sense evades them; refuse to debunk an argument point by point based on its demerits; resort to pure emotionalism; resort to group-oriented rhetoric (the old appealing to the "constituencies" rhetoric trick); refuse to even listen to a point of view calmly set forth; or even think about another point of view in an open-minded manner (at least be able to reiterate the Opfor points clearly with a clear level of understanding).
No true dialogue or communication is possible with some of the close-minded elements that populate the radical activist liberal left.
