Agreed. He was ready to answer before Lehrer finished his questions.
Then explain how Kerry did so lousy answering virtually the same questions for Diane Sawyer only a day before. Either he's always a gifted speaker who can anticipate questions in advance or he never can do so. No one gets it both ways, not even Kerry.
I wondered about that too. Maybe we're just paranoid after the CBS Rathergate fiasco but I was suspicious. I also thought Lehrer had a funny look when he said that the question were prepared by him and unknown to the candidates.
When it really stuck out was when Kerry used a story about Kennedy offering to show photos to the French premier during the Cuban missle crisis--I thought Kerry was just a little too facile for a live debate situation.
It was just too perfect and now that level of perfection makes me suspicious.
Too bad Bob Schiffer wasn't running last night's debate--it would be all too easy to make a question of CBS's integrity stick.
Then why didn't he do it eloquently and off the cuff for the last year on the campaign trail or even one day before with Diane Sawyer? You either have the "gift" or you don't. Not just on some days and not on others.
Because, like professional athletes, one isn't always on one's game. Last night, Kerry was on his game.
Clinton referred to Leher has "our moderator". Nothing has changed.
Always? What about the last year on the campaign trail or the Diane Sawyer interview or the recent one with Imus where Imus said he didn't have any idea what Kerry had just said to him?
Actually, Bush shook Lehrer's hand immediately after the debate, before the families came up on stage (at least that's the way I remember it).
I can agree with that statement.... did you see the Democrat primary debates? He got pretty "proficient" since then I suppose.
I agree he's no dummy and very well spoken... I haven't seen a transcript yet but I would be very curious to see if it reads like a position paper instead of conversational norms.... Just my OPINION though..
Thanks, I do.
I noticed Bush went to the moderator's table immediately after the debate to shake Lehrer's hand first. Kerry didn't think of that I guess.
If Kerry had the questions beforehand, why didn't he come up with a more understandable explanation of what he plans to do in Iraq?
Why did he state that the NYC subway had been closed during the Republican convention (something I am told is not true)? Why did he call the square in Moscow the "Treblinka" Square?
This whole discussion is silly in my opinion.
Liberals are masters of Sophistry..
Maybe we all need to FReep PBS with a cc to FoxNews and ask Lehrer if he leaked the points to Kerry BEFORE the debate!!!!
I could have missed it. Fortunately, there's tape on it, so I can have a look before saying that again.
So Kerry was "off his game" for the last 10 months up until and including the day before the debates and then suddenly he was "on his game" again, just like that? Sorry I don't believe in coincidences.
Lehrer wasn't going to ask him about our trade policy towards Luxembourg or something; it wouldn't have taken a rocket scientist (Even without a vast campaign and research staff) to basically guess what he was likely to be asked about and then develop totally prepared or semi-prepared practiced responses to those questions.
Exactly... the questions flowed with the answers...perfectly... JMO
No, it was Jim Lehrer who received the questions to be used for the debate from John Kerry. Everybody knows that!
Opinion.... is ...opinion
Agree. Bush was just... just... bad.
