This election does not come down to one 90-minute debate. It comes down to history, and doing what is right. In that arena, Bush wins hands-down. Just ask the Swifties.

Bush, throughout the evening, as Kerry spoke, had that pursed and annoyed look.

Maybe my memory is bad, but I seem to remember the same look on Bush's face in the debates with Gore. Bush always look that way when listening. It's nothing new.

There us nothing wrong in sounding like a Texan. I personally do not like to listen to people that do not know that a lot words have an "A" in them. ie North Easterners

I sadly agree. I saw it unfolding 5 minutes into the stinkin' thing.

It was almost painful to watch.

I have a feeling that Bush could have done just the same — exactly the same, no better, no worse — with zero preparation. With no practice at all. Just wingin' it.

And I think that is exactly what Bush was doing.

If I were just a normal

But you're not a normal person. You're an insider. You can't know what normal people think based solely on your own interpretation. We have to wait and see what normal people thought. By the way, how many watched? Do we know that yet?

I don't agree with the author. I thought Bush was better on substance (Kerry had little to none), while Kerry was better on delivery/style.

As you can see in this photo, though, Kerry certainly was prettier than Dubya! LOL

This article is already obsolete.

Kerry's "Style" win is meaningless--it was never a question of whether he can talk.

What is in question is his ability to lead. What are people talking about on the radio shows? "Global Test".

I hate to say it, but I agree. I thought Bush did not do well, and if I were some schmoe who rarely paid attention to politics, and only watched last night's debate, I'd vote for Kerry.

I hate to write this, but I agree with the over-all tone of this piece. A good performance in this debate would've been a kill-shot for GWB. Instead, GWB let Long Jawn live to fight another day.

He had a wonderful disposition considering the tripe he was held hostage to. I probably would have had to go over there and slap Kerry in the head a few times..

Kerry, who was good on generalities (as well as details).

Generalities, yes. Details, no. The transcript shows that Kerry's facts just aren't so.

I think this is a bit too much hand-wringing. Bush can't speak well, the American people already know that, and his accent and his facial tics. I don't think anyone who was planning to vote for Bush was persuaded to vote for Kerry, and I doubt anyone who was planning to vote for Kerry will now switch to Bush. Kerry had more to prove last night then Bush and he survived. President Bush is not going to lose the race because of this debate. Now, I'm looking forward to the VP Cheney's debate with Edwards. For next week's debate hopefully the President will be more attuned to how Kerry debates, maybe a little more prepared, and a little rested.

Other than the voting for Kerry part (I don't think the debate swayed opinion one way or the other) I think the analysis is pretty straight on. Bush didn't look that great and missed so many opportunities to cut Kerry to bits. But, this might actually help Bush next time because the CW is going to be that Kerry is a super duper debater and Bush is a mangler. Hopefully, the President will clear is sched on the next debate day, go in fresh, and knock one out of the park...for the Gipper, of course.

Get a grip people. Kerry is a slick politician. People that are impressed by slick politicians will rally around the fact that he didn't give away the election last night. That's the only downside to the debate.

Bush performed adequately and certainly won the debate if you look at the content of the answers.

Kerry boiled his candidacy down to two words: GLOBAL TEST

By this time next week, the pundits will be reversing their opinions on this debate based on the chill that comment alone is going to put on his election hopes...

If Rove is on his game, we're going to beat this into the brains of every man, woman, and child in the United States over the next four weeks.

I have to agree with most of what this guy says. Bush thrives on the campaign trail and survives the debates. I found myself over and over again wanting to whisper good retorts into his ear or finish a sentence for him when he seemed to have forgotten what he was going to say. How can someone be such an excellent public speaker and such a lousey debater? I was praying for him the entire time. I hope next time he gets more rest but I am not sure it will help.

Go W.!
