Back in 93, I was discussing the proposed smoking ban in our state (California) with a coworker who happened to be an ex-military nurse.
She was all for it and said that the government should step in and save us from ourselves because of the cost burden to taxpayers in medical expenses for smokers.
I told her that if that were true, that we could soon expect government issued fast food ration cards, as poor eating habits also contribute to medical expenses paid for by our tax dollars. Boy...sometimes I hate being right.
As an aside, isn't it interesting that there are folks that have medical conditions attributed to over eating or poor eating habits, that are officially listed as poor.
Ironic that our poor would be dieing from overeating.
