WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson and other black political leaders spread a message of victimization that leads most blacks to vote Democratic, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson charged Wednesday.
The HUD secretary said he has advised President Bush's campaign to focus its efforts on younger blacks who did not grow up during the civil rights era because older blacks who did "have been conditioned" to vote Democratic by Jesse Jackson, NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and others.
"They have made a living telling black people they are victims," the HUD secretary said in an interview with The Associated Press. "As long as they keep them in victim mode, they have liberals who will take care of them."
Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry announced Wednesday that Jesse Jackson has joined the campaign as a senior adviser. The move comes amid recent polling showing Kerry's support slipping among blacks.
The Kerry campaign said Jesse Jackson will travel to battleground states to energize Democratic support for Kerry and running mate John Edwards.
A Pew Research Center poll released Tuesday showed 73 percent of blacks supporting Kerry, down from 83 percent in August. Bush's support among blacks was at 12 percent, up from 6 percent.
The HUD secretary, who said he has been consulting with Bush strategist Karl Rove and other campaign officials, said Republicans are targeting blacks who are under 40 with a message that Bush's economic policies are better for them.
"You can't rise as a class. You have to rise individually. It's what many of the civil rights-era people don't understand," he said. "They want us to rise together, they keep telling us that we are victims. If they keep telling us they are victims, then there is a role for them to play."

Actually this is true. The Dems have to keep people in victim mode. Thankfully a lot of younger blacks are seeing the truth.
Looks like all the clowns are officially in the tent.
This, among other topics, is what Bush was speaking to in arguably his strongest line of his RNC speech when he labeled such Dem outlooks as- "the soft bigotry of low expectations."
I had the pleasure of having Sec. Jackson speak at my college graduation - he received a standing ovation - started by the black members of the audience and graduating class. Very cool guy.
Cool guy might be a label some would use. I prefer the label of adulterer for him or even bigot.
I live in Greenville, SC where Jesse grew up and he gets very little respect here. His body guards actually threatened to harm city leaders during debates to include Martin Luther King Day as a gov't holiday last year. There were several civil arguments to oppose it and it was voted on by the citizens and Jesse lost his battle. Greatly because of the lack of repect he garners in his own hometown.
He certainly is an engaging public speaker, but a cool guy that does not make.
Actually she said Sec. Jackson- not Jesse Jackson. Otherwise I agree with you.
Thanks for catching my mistake. My apologies to mabelkitty. That's what happens when you take a quick look at things while at work and don't read thoroughly.
extortionist?
Absolutely. Those debates in Greenville, SC got really heated with his Rainbow Coalition thinking they would come down here and force the city officials to give-in. It got so bad that threats were made by Jesse's entourage and one meeting almost broke into a fight. I was surprised that it never made any waves on the national scene.
Regardless, the proposal did not pass and Jesse left with his tail between his legs. Even to this day (current Dem campaign ads) Dems campaign that the republican leaders do not support black interests because they did not approve recognizing MLK Day. They leave out the little fact that it was actually put to a city-wide vote and the people voted not to incorporated it. I don't feel it was a racial decision by most. Most seem to recognize MLK Jr. was a great man, but there are already too many paid gov't holidays. I happen to agree.
I think he is an extortionist.
He, only a few weeks ago said Kerry was wrong/and he did not like the things kerry was doing, and that Kerry was not reaching out to blacks. Then he went further to say he liked the things Karl Rove was doing and on and on. Remember the "Vanilla shake" reference?
This was only because he was not getting a piece of the pie. As was evident last week when the information came out that the voter registration money was not going to the typical black groups. The rainbow push coalition was not getting some 8 million dollars as they had in the past for voter registration.
Now, all of a sudden, Jesse Jackson gets a plane to fly around in and I bet you money in his pocket. So of course he's back on the band wagon for Kerry.
Excuse me, but Jesse Jackson is NOT Secretary of Anything.
I was referring, with respect, to Secretary of HUD, Alphonso Jackson.
I refer to Condi Rice in the same respect - she is Dr. Rice.
read post #8. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
I gotcha.
I read too fast, as well ; )
