Westport's Martha Stewart has been ordered to report to a prison in West Virginia to serve her five-month term, a source close to Stewart said today.
Stewart had hoped to serve her time in Danbury so she could be close to her 90-year-old mother, or in a prison facility in Florida where there are good transporation links.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons told Stewart last week to report to jail by Oct. 8. The source said Stewart had been told to report to the federal prison camp for women in Alderson, W. Va.
Stewart's lawyer, in a Sept. 15 letter to a federal judge requesting she be allowing to serve her sentence for obstruction of justice as soon as possible, specifically asked that she not been assigned to Alderson because it is not readily accessible by air or rail.

ALDERSON FEDERAL PRISON CAMP Nickname: Camp Cupcake Location: Alderson, W.Va. Security: Minimum Population: 1,012 History: The first federal prison for women, Alderson opened in 1927. It was the vision of Eleanor Roosevelt and Mabel Walker Willebrandt, the first woman appointed to run federal prisons. Amenities: Set on a hill in rural West Virginia, Alderson is known for its open environment. There are no metal fences surrounding the camp. Inmates have fixed schedules and must work, but free time can be spent playing volleyball, softball or tennis or doing aerobics. Famous inmates: Billie Holiday; Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, a member of the Manson family who tried to shoot President Ford; Sara Jane Moore, who also tried to kill Ford. Quote: “It looks like a college. There’s no bars, no locked doors, no razor wire. If you have to do time, do it at Alderson because it is nice.” — Vicki Webb, who served time for embezzlement.

It would be a shame if Martha completed her sentence before the various ramp festivals were held in the spring. Oh well, perhaps she'll send a camera crew.

Don't forget to add the garlic smell!
Once eaten, you'll exude the lovely ramp odor for days! :o)

Everything's relative in West Virginia.
In that part of the world, she'll be the only one with a complete set of teeth.

Mixed feelings about Martha.
She's in jail because of her own arrogance. She is an active Democrat and supported Clinton.
But I would have sentenced her to public service for several years instead of prison. Its unlikely she poses any threat to anybody and there are better candidates for her room - like Dan Blather or whoever forged those documents on Bush.

The Bureau of Prison stated that the prisons Stewart requested were full. Alderson is just another minimum security federal prison. If someone was out to get her, she'd be in a maximum security federal prison. Well, I hope so. It still seems odd to me that they couldn't squeeze her in somewhere in NE. It seems to me that they are underestimating her safety. As a celebrity, she won't be an anonymous inmate, she will have more than the usual attention, good and bad. I didn't realize Alderson was a minimum security prison. That's a 'good thing'.

But who would want to go to prison in FL during the hurricane season?

I have to take back what I said in Post 49. Both Fromme and Moore attempted escapes from this prison. Moore is now in prison in California, and Fromme is in prison in Texas.

Proud history and mission statement of Martha's new home.
Front gate to Martha's new home. (Heck, probably looks just like the gate she has at the Stewart family compound!)
Distinguished alumni of Martha's new home: Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme - founding member of the Charles Manson fan club.

Just imagine a smell somewhat worse than Limburger cheese mixed with green onion. Naaa...worse than that even, but yummy.

A word of advice, Martha:
Get used to the language in WV. They say strange things like "Uncle Daddy" and "Aunt Grandma".
Though I'm not really sure why....
