Westport's Martha Stewart has been ordered to report to a prison in West Virginia to serve her five-month term, a source close to Stewart said today.
Stewart had hoped to serve her time in Danbury so she could be close to her 90-year-old mother, or in a prison facility in Florida where there are good transporation links.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons told Stewart last week to report to jail by Oct. 8. The source said Stewart had been told to report to the federal prison camp for women in Alderson, W. Va.
Stewart's lawyer, in a Sept. 15 letter to a federal judge requesting she be allowing to serve her sentence for obstruction of justice as soon as possible, specifically asked that she not been assigned to Alderson because it is not readily accessible by air or rail.
The West Virginia prison, nicknamed Camp Cupcake, opened in 1927 as the first federal prison for women. It was the vision of Eleanor Roosevelt and Mabel Walker Willebrandt, the first woman appointed to run federal prisons.
The facility is set on a hill in a rural area. There are no metal fences surrounding the camp. Inmates have fixed schedules and must work, but free time can be spent playing volleyball, softball or tennis, or doing aerobics.
Billie Holiday, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, a member of the Manson family who tried to shoot President Ford, and Sara Jane Moore, who also tried to kill Ford, are among the facility's alumnae.
HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!
< I am just assuming that since WV is overwhelming white that the facility will be too. In WV, white women go to jail. In CT, the tiny percentage of black women they have go to jail. I don't think too many white women in CT are going to jail. >
It's a FEDERAL prison. The make up is from all over the country.
WV doesn't have a large black population. Actually, it would be a lot less if the Job Corps (Chas and Harper's Ferry)hadn't been located here years ago. Disenfranchised blacks (and to a lesser extent, whites)were brought here for training (local joke)and didn't leave. Our upturn in drug traffic can be tracked to this event also. No, it isn't racist, just a fact. No offense meant.
Ford really had woman trouble. I guess that movie about Bill got the wrong man.
60 miles? lol Alderson is about 15 from the county seat, which is Lewisburg. And, about 25 from the famous Greenbrier Resort. Maybe 40 to Beckley... We're not that much in the "boondocks"! lol.
Just curious - IIRC neither Fromme nor Moore have made it back into the world - how is it that they are "alumane" - i.e. no longer there? Did they get transferred somewhere else?
YIKES, For a moment I thought it said Andersonville!!! The Queen of Mean, could have gotten a taste of our southern comfort.. pity, oh well shuffling along.. :(
Hahahaahahaaaha!!!!!!! Hinton, WV.......30 min! lol lol
Both are still at that facility, so they can't be alumnae. A better term would be "inmates."
All right, Louie! You can just pop down the road and get Martha to help you with Jello molds and Christmas wreaths this year!
Indeed, there are some wonderful quiltmakers here. Martha probaby will want to dedicate several issues of "Martha Stewart Living" to this particular form of folk art. Perhaps she also will do an episode of the TV show on fun foods made with ramps (an acquired taste, to be sure, and quite exotic to the Hamptons and Connecticut palates). Yessir, I can see an entire Thanksgiving dinner in this style: ramp and cornbread dressing for the turkey, sauteed ramps as a side dish, ramp wine, ramp jelly - the possibilities are endless.
Country roads, take me home
To the place, I belong

"It's a good thing."
what the heck is a ramp??
What's a ramp, you ask? What's the worst smell you can imagine? Multiply that by 10 and apply it to an onion-like wild plant, and you have ramps.
John Kerry, Jane Fonda should be joining her too. They have committed more heinous crimes during the Vietnam era, than Martha ever had.
I don't care for Martha, Probably because she is too perfect.
John Kerry, and Jane Fonda meanwhile live a life of luxury and wealth on the backs of VietNam Vets who put their lives at risk.
/wrinkling nose in disgust.... ; )
What makes you think that prison is "virtually all white"?
So were Kathleen Boylan and Abigail Miller.
Charming place.
And maybe we can reunite "The Ramp Supper Band" to organize the theme music! LOL
