NFL concedes mistakes by officials (in Redskins-Cowboys game)
Washington Times ^ | Sep. 29, 04 | Mark Zuckerman

Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs yesterday expressed displeasure with a pair of officiating calls in Washington's 21-18 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, and the NFL responded by conceding its crew made two mistakes. A club source said league officials reviewed the two plays in question — a pass interference call on Redskins cornerback Walt Harris in the first quarter, and a no-call on a deep pass to Rod Gardner in the fourth quarter. The league conceded error in both cases.

Well, if NFL coaches have to scrape up a seven-year old story to be pissed at Parcells, their pettiness is transparent.

Nobody, ultimately, cares about feuds between coaches. If the Cowboys win, that's all that matters.

And afterwords was on the Cowboys coaching staff for years. He was great.

Yep, Special Teams Coach as I recall. Undoubtedly Da Coach learned a lot from Tom Landry.

"Any questions?"

How come they're called Dallas Cowboys if they practice and play their games in Irving, TX?

Gibbs has won three super bowls, hardly a loser.
While the nations capital may be a lab for liberal ideas, it's still our capital and a beacon for freedom and liberty the world over. Harldy a losing proposition.

Kill Bush? What kind of idiodic remark is that?

I didn't see the second call but the first call was bogus. The Redskins' cornerback was pushed down by the receiver. It should have been offensive pass interference.

I'm glad Gibbs is back. He's a great coach and and a great man.

"And this Peter King article talks about why."

Hmmm... and all along I thought it was due to his sexual proclivities.... Or, at least, that' what I heard (not that there's anything WRONG with that...)

Referees should be younger, more fit, better eyesight: recent retirees from the league might be best...not guys in their 50s who never played and sadly cannot see very well.

NFL referees typically start refereeing at the HS level, move on the college level, then to the NFL. The selection process is stringent and for those referees who make it to the NFL level their performance is monitored weekly during the football season.

I saw coach Bugel on the local DC news yesterday. He says the refs missed a call on the last play of the game. The defensive player went airborne and made helmet to helmet contact.

You are right, but the difference is that both of the Portis non-calls (trapping the ball and then running after having been touched and putting his knee down) were reviewable, but Parcells chose not to challenge them. The pass interference calls were not subject to review.

So, instead of honestly evaluating why the Skins can't stuff it in the end zone from the two yard line with a back who picks up five yards a carry, Bugel and Gibbs whine about officiating.

Pretty self serving article. The two calls in question were judgment calls by officials on rules that are subjective anyway. However, what was also missed, and clearly -- based on a rule that isn't subjective -- was the play were the Redskin receiver trapped the pass, got up, was tackled, kept going, and the officials gave him both the catch and the final spot when it should have been no catch, or, at worst, down by contact a yard or so beyond the catch.

Trust me: even in a game marred by officials' errors, the officials made fewer mistakes than the coaches and many, many fewer mistakes than the players.

Referee mistakes are a given in any sport. I would guess in the course of a few years it evens out. If you want to win in the face of bad refereeing you have to score more points.

The real question is "Who at the NFL determines the winner of each game and how much time before the game is played?"

He didn't have time to challenge them - the Redskins wisely snapped the ball very quickly to take advantage of the rule that says a challenge cannot be lodged if the next play occurs. And, Parcells had challenged and lost on an earlier play, and probably didn't want to risk losing the second time out.

No complaints here about that - the quick snap is part of the game and Parcells should have thrown the challenge rag quickly if he wanted to challenge. My only point was that not all the bad calls went against the Redskins. You probably won't see any member of that officiating crew at the Super Bowl.

The thing that ticked me off the most about he bears vikings game is they actually threw the flag when they saw the penaltys then picked the flagg back up without assesing any penalty. They did it three times in that game like the blatant pass interference where the minnesota player TACKLED the bears reciver before the ball got to him and the ref threw the flag then picked it back up.My brother was half watching the game and hes only seen about 4 football games in his life all arena league and he knew right away that it was pass interference! The only thing I can think of why they picked up the flag is they instisnctivly threw it down when they saw the obvious penelty but then realised that they got paid a lot of money under the table by minnsotas G.M. to do everything in thier power to garuntee a minnasota victory.I bet there are a lot of refs from that game driving 2005 corvettes and mustangs around this week

Th bottom line is that on first and goal from the 1 you should be able to score, especially with a good running back and veteran QB. They did not and had to kick a field goal and thus lost the game.

Classic Cowboy Fan myopia - I guess the Drew Pearson hail mary against the Vikes wasn't offensive pass interference either. Just admit you got away with one and move on. (Dan Rather = Cowboy fan)
