I didn't think a person could recover from a laser burned retina. This is bad, bad, news if it was a terrorist attack, unless there are special lenses a pilot can wear.

I think the U.S. military came up with some kind of goggles they issued to flight crews on U.S. surveillance flights near the Soviet border in the 80's.

I didn't think a person could recover from a laser burned retina. If it hits the nerve connection to the eyeball, its lights out forever.
Otherwise, you just end up with some crappy spots in your vision. (assuming the wavelength reaches the retina in the first place)
