David Broder Loses His Way
Reason ^ | September 28, 2004 | Jeff A. Taylor and the Reason staff

The veteran Washington Post columnist penned an almost note-perfect epitaph for the age of monolithic media by somehow confusing thread-bare bloggers with celebrity-chasing corporate chieftains. Evidently all that matters to Broder is that there exist people outside of the priestly caste of High Journalism who make news decisions. And that is wrong, heresy perhaps.

Broder fails to even mention the transformative effect technology has had in the dissemination of information. Perhaps that is because High Journalism never understood what was going on, as it clung to a top-down model of info dispersal. Perhaps if the big news outlets had understood what was going on they would have shifted to a role of informational mediator rather than attempt to be the source of all info just as potential info sources multiplied. Plus an actual pursuit of community might've allowed newspapers to capture some, if not all, of the revenue that now whizzes back and forth on eBay, the nation's classified section/swap meet.

Despite all of the lip service given to "community journalism" by the big newspaper chains, actual trust in their local communities is hard to find. Top editors name the issues, problems, and solutions of the day quite regardless of the interests, beliefs, and priorities of the community at large.

Hence, The New York Times decides Augusta needs to change its membership practices and front page stories appear to nudge the change along. No blogger or corporate bean-counter forced that particular windmill tilt. Likewise pick up any major daily paper most any day of the week and more public money will be touted as a solution to some social ill. High Journalism almost never deviates from that tenet of faith leaving unbelievers in the community to search elsewhere for their truth.

Broder would have his readers believe that alternative media, bloggers, and Web sites are simply meaner and greedier than Broder's strain of pure journalism. Fair enough, in spots. But the new approach can also be better than the old, too.

David Broder, Dan Rather:

The two poster-boys for the ills of McCain-Feingold.

I have to disagree. Print is dead. You can stick a rocket up a horse's @ss, but it still won't be as good as a car. That being said, most of the newspaper people I know are dinosaurs, and everybody on CBS should be required to do one show without botox or a wig.

It would have been breaking news to have heard he actually had found his way.

These days, Broder reminds me of a liberal school marm whom I knew in high school: sincere, polite, high-minded -- and utterly out of touch.

That is how it happened that old pros such as Dan Rather and former New York Times editor Howell Raines got caught up in this fevered atmosphere and let their standards slip.

Piffle..Read this!

"....a scurrilous and largely inaccurate attack on the Vietnam service of John Kerry....

I had to stop right there. When a scumbag like Broder insults the integrity of over 200 Vietnam veterans who had the guts to report the the truth about Kerry's four months in Vietnam and the betrayal that immediately followed, I stop reading him.

Time was when any outfit such as Swift Boat Veterans for Truth that came around peddling an ad with implausible charges would have run into a hard-nosed reporter whose first questions -- before he or she ran with the story -- would have been, "Who the hell are you guys? What's your angle? What's your proof?"

Ooooh, the hard-nosed reporter makes his appearance. Not enough of these says Broder.

You senile coot, Broder. Old Media did nothing but ignore or attempt unconvincingly to debunk the Swifties. No shortage of "hard-noses" there. But any rumor, claim, or outright hoax supportive of Kerry and the reporters clamor and jostle to be seen as the deepest burrowing brown-noser.

I E-Mailed this to Broder - and his mailbox kicked it back.

None of the exaggerated combat reports have been proven to be written by anyone other than J. F. Kerry. That is why the Swifties are doing the tougher job of trying to prove that only Kerry could have or did write those reports.

About ten days ago, a document was found in a publically available archive with an official report of the actions of the Silver Star day. That report supports the Swifties version and was probably written by LT Rood. Why doesn't the press ask him? Another report on that day is referred to in the message traffic, from 44 minutes before. Folks are still trying to get that report- it should be the Kerry inflated one.

I guess the "hard nosed reporters" left only get excited when the evidence fits their personal political views. Or does the Kerry canpaign think we'll believe the dead guys wrote it?

That pretty much says it. But Broder shuts his mind, or at least his email box, just like my old liberal school marm used to do when caught out on an issue.

Broder's column was little more than a disguised hit-piece on the Swift Boat Vets. We shall be seeing more and more of these hit-pieces from the left-stream media between now and the election in their vain attempts to trick the people into believing the Traitor is not a traitor.
