Girl Stabbed in Back at Michigan High School; Ex-Boyfriend Charged With Attempted Murder

BRUCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A 16-year-old girl was stabbed in the back with an 8-inch kitchen knife as she walked in a hallway at her high school, and her ex-boyfriend was arrested nearby and charged with attempted murder, police said.

Nicole Lambert was recovering from the Monday morning attack. Her ex-boyfriend, Eric Schorling, 16, was charged with attempted murder, Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said.

Lambert was standing near the library at Romeo High School about 7:20 a.m. when Schorling allegedly stabbed her in the back and fled.

The girl initially thought she had been punched in the back until she walked to class and a teacher saw the knife in her back, Sgt. Bill Mangan said.

"I was just like, 'Wow.' I mean, she still had her books in her hands and the blood was dripping off the knife down her pant leg," student Shannon O'Brien, 14, said.

Schorling was arrested about an hour later in a culvert near an open field, Hackel said. He had attended Romeo High for two years until switching this year to an alternative education program. Friends said he and Lambert broke up a few months ago after dating for almost a year.

Schorling was arraigned on charges of attempted murder, assault with intent to murder and carrying a weapon in weapons-free school zone. He was jailed on a $1 million bond pending a preliminary hearing Nov. 9. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.

Lambert was hospitalized in guarded condition late Monday.

The 1,750-student high school in Romeo, 30 miles north of downtown Detroit, does not have metal detectors or require students to wear identification.

What's his defense, "I didn't know it was just a metaphor"?

an 8-inch kitchen knife

Silly, but I've always wondered whether that "8 inches" includes the handle or is it just the blade they are referring to?

Depends on how liberal the author is...

It's always the blade length, even if the author knows nothing about knives. Girl's lucky to be alive.

That will now change thanks to Mr. Schorling.

I am two cities south of Romeo. It is yuppie and rural at the same time.

Detroit's layout is strange because you have nice suburb, nice suburb then blight. Romeo is quickly becoming yuppie heaven (like a southern Okemos for those in Lansing). I have a real problem know what kind of area I am in here.

All I know is that I am glad I homeschool!!

Romeo is a beautiful old city. Surrounded by Orchards and farms. VERY upscale. They do seem to have some problems though, several years ago, after they had spent a whole summer revamping the school (especially the computer lab) some kids broke in and destroyed the computer lab and a good portion of the school had water damage due to the sprinkler system going off.

This is NOT because of Detroit violence, it is more of uncontrolled liberal education.

I was born and raised in Romeo. It's very Republican and quite beautiful. This is an isolated incident and will not change anything in this idyllic village. Bulldogs for Bush!!!

"alternative education program" = code phrase for "high school for F***-ups". This kid was already "in trouble" for something, or a number of somethings before He did this.

BTW, Romeo is a nice town. home town to both Kid rock and My barber, So it can't be too bad a place :^ P

It's not the length, it's how you use it.

So they say.
