Bush: Militarizing Border Won't Stop Illegal Deluge

The U.S. has no plans to deploy troops along the Mexican border to stanch the deluge of illegal aliens currently pouring into the country at the rate of 3 million per year, President Bush said in an interview broadcast on Monday.

"As the governor of Texas, I was very aware of this issue," Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

Story Continues Below

"There is a long border, that makes it hard to control. We have beefed up places along the border to try to stop" the flow, he said. When told that his policy didn't seem to be working, Bush insisted, "It’s working a little better.

"They're doing a pretty good job down in Arizona, which is the main border crossing. ... I think there's a thousand more border patrol agents along the border. We’re modernizing border techniques, we’re using better surveillance methods to stop this crossing at the border."

The president contended, however, that illegal immigration was driven primarily by the economic realities of the region.

"If you can make 50 cents in the interior of Mexico and five bucks in the interior of the United States, you're coming for the five bucks," he explained.

"I happen to believe the best way to enhance the border is to have temporary-worker cards available for people," he said. "I think the long-term solution for this issue on our border is for Mexico to grow a middle class. That's why I believe in NAFTA."

When warned that "a lot of people are not going to like that answer," Bush told O'Reilly, "Well it’s a, a truthful answer."

Do you place them under citizen's arrest for trespassing, or are you afraid they'll say mean things to you?

The federal government ought to take your advice. Or do you think they are afraid they'll say something mean to them?

There is no public mandate now to militarize the Mexican border. Period.

You are nutty.

I have two beloved siblings living in Los Angeles who are happy, prosperous and God-blessed family people. I was in L.A. in August, and it seemed like an American city to me. Just like the thirty times I'd been there before.

People who wish can shrivel from life while besieged in a bunker in the mountains of northern Idaho.

Keep it off FR. We're not like that.

There's no public mandate for doing something effective, as concrete measures would inconvenience a large amount of the same people who oppose illegal immigration in the abstract. Once you start talking about specific actions, all manner of objections spring up.

"Everyone wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die."

BTW, one of my hobbies is calling La Migra in on the guys who pick up day labor in their trucks...the ones with bumper stickers for FAIR, American Patrol, etc.

No, the federal government can't hire enough bodies to do the job, because people like you start whining about all those government employees.

Why do you rent your house to a bunch of alcoholics?

I don't. They decide to crash on the doorsteps because there is a tree out front the provides shade.

I'm just doing my patriotic part to help W's "guest workers" find a convenient place to drink and pee.

Think he'll thank me in the debates?

Deputy March was killed by an illegal alien, in the line of duty on April 29, 2002 during a traffic stop in Irwindale. Shot through the face.

Yeah, just run around and place them all under arrest, while the feds figure out a way to silence you, if you don't get killed first.

You do realize that there is more than ONE neighborhood in Los Angeles, right?

Hell, if your dsputing it, i'll take pictures.

Would you accept the proof?

We like proof here on FR. We ARE like that.

That's why I believe in NAFTA

Of course with NAFTA the Mexicans are not making anything close to the $5 an hour they get inside the USA either --- NAFTA jobs get them less than that 50 cents he mentioned --- really Bush cannot be this dumb. He has got to be fully aware that NAFTA takes companies to Mexico only for those dirt wages.

50 yards of land mines would stop all traffic within a week.

Instead of going after the good citizen here, why don't you ask Bush why we doesn't secure our borders from the millions entering illegally? During war time yet.

The taxpayers in areas of high immigration are having their property --- their hard earned money --- confiscated at an increasingly ridiculous rate to pay for the free education and healthcare of the cheap slaves that others want to bring in. Property taxes are extremely high here and about to go up $1000 or more for the average type person. It's totalitarian already when the government must take $4000 to $5000 a year on just a cheap house or it slaps a lien on it and penalties that make it impossible to keep your house.

"The proposed 'Fair Tax' scheme would provide that economic incentive..

It would abolish income taxes & SS deductions for a 20% [or more] federal sales tax on EVERY new product or service, even food/clothes/etc.

Illegals would have to pay the tax, but they would not be reimbursed, as would citizens. In effect an illegals cost of living would go up by whatever the individual tax rebate would set at. For illegals with families, it would probably price them out of our labor market."

Very good. Great ideas in fact. I take back everything bad I've said about you. Well, almost everything.
