TRENTON, N.J. -- Republican businessman Doug Forrester, one of the state's several possible gubernatorial candidates, on Monday unveiled a media campaign pressing CBS to oust anchor Dan Rather.
Forrester's campaign is to be waged on radio, television and the Internet starting Tuesday. Advertisements have been submitted to air in the Philadelphia and New York markets for the next several weeks on the major networks as well as cable channels, including CNN.
CBS and Rather have been under fire for a reliance on apparently fake documents to suggest President Bush's National Guard service record was less than stellar.
"Dan Rather is a classic example of liberal media bias," state the advertisements. "It wasn't just sloppy journalism, it was political bias."
Forrester said he expects the media campaign will garner names for a petition drive to oust Rather on a new Web site called DanRatherMustGo.com.
"He needs to be held accountable for an egregious political piece, and I believe that CBS and America will be better if he retires," said Forrester.
CBS spokeswoman Sandy Genelius said Forrester may not be speaking for many people.
"One of the greatest things about America is everyone's right to have their own opinion. Mr. Forrester may not be in the majority, but he has a right to express his feelings," she said.
Forrester was GOP candidate in the 2002 race for the U.S. Senate won by Frank Lautenberg after incumbent Democrat Robert Torricelli dropped out amid an ethics scandal.
While Forrester maintained the spots are not aimed at earning him attention from conservatives for a gubernatorial run, they are the second group of politically tinged ads he has sponsored in as many months.
"The merits of what we are doing here are self-evident," he said. "It would have been done irrespective of any comment about political aspirations."
In August, Forrester announced plans to air a series of radio and television commercials, telling voters the state needs a change in leadership.
Forrester said the anti-Rather campaign could be lengthened depending on the amount of support it gains. He said he would be willing to raise and spend as much as $1 million on the advertising.
"I trust that there are a large number of people out there who feel as I do," he said.
Officials involved with the advertisements declined to say how much had already been spent.
Last week, a Texas congressional candidate launched a television campaign ad linking his opponent to Rather, accusing the incumbent of airing advertisements that have "more holes than a CBS News story by Dan Rather."
This just gets funnier every day!

sorry, ran a search and missed it
it seems that NewsMax is changing the titles of AP stories again.
My thread title is:
GOP businessman Forrester seeks Dan Rather's ouster Newsday.com ^ | September 27, 2004 | EVAN BERLAND
Your thread title is:
N.J. Gubernatorial Hopeful Seeks Dan Rather's Ouster NewsMax ^ | 9/27/04 | Carl Limbacher/AP
Now I see it , mine is Newsday, and yours is Newsmax
It is okay..it was a different source, different title.
I am a big fan of Forrester.
Me too, I like Forrester, Was very disappointed he did not beat Lautenberg, he should of , because he was sure the better man.
I hope we throw out all incumbents as they come up for re-election......and that means republicans too.
No, it pisses me off when some of these media outlets change titles (but in no way change the story). It results in too many duplicate threads.
