WAUSAU, Wis. - With terrorism the new global threat, a network of radio antennas that let the Navy maintain secure communications with submarines at sea has become yet another Cold War relic.
On Thursday, the Navy will shut off its extremely low frequency (ELF) radio transmitters in northern Wisconsin and Michigan, saying the 15-year-old system,first proposed in the 1960s, is outdated and no longer needed. The Navy now will use 12 "very low frequency" transmitters located worldwide.

ELF is a VERY-low-bandwidth system. It's pretty much useless except as a pager system, and even that takes 15 minutes to work.

Was that the system where the wavelength was measured in miles? I'm pretty sure it is. Mammoth antenna arrays, right? And some kind of group was always protesting it, claiming it caused something or other?

Among the concerns from enviornmentalists was that the radiation from the buried cables would cause the earth worms to rise to the surface. I mean talk about calamities -obese robins all over the place - another law suit for Edwards.

HEY FOLKS, please remember that this communications system was a VITAL ADVANTAGE to the US at time of inception.
The "Enviromentalists" weren't "crazies", they were enemies of the US, using the US media as a sounding board to not only arouse alarm for this new STATE-OF-THE-ART WEAPONS SYSTEM, but for also trying to expose the locations, technologies, stategeries etc. of the ELF, imho.
