Man With Bomb Materials Arrested Near Bridge (New York)
WINS News ^ | 9/27/04

A Queens man was arrested after police found substances used in the manufacturing of explosives in his van near the Atlantic Beach Bridge on Long Island.

Nassau County Police say an officer on the way to another assignment saw a van parked near some high reeds off Route 878 in Lawrence at about 6:30 Friday night. 56-year-old Hippocrates Koutosoupakis of Astoria was found nearby.

Police say the potentially dangerous substances were inside Koutosoupakis's van and that it "was his intention to cause an explosion."

Authorities say Koutosopakis was wearing military-style suspenders with pockets containing tools and a propane torch. He also allegedly had a stun gun.

The Daily News reports this morning, Koutosopakis also had with him rappelling gear and a map of nearby Kennedy airport. Also, a search of his home turned up several improvised explosives.

Koutosopakis is a Vietnam veteran with no prior criminal record, according to the News.

He's charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree criminal possession of a dangerous instrument.

The nearby Atlantic Beach Bridge was closed for 16 hours as a precaution but reopened after investigators found nothing.

The guy sure has a weird name

His name is Greek and fits in well with his Astoria address. Many many Greeks live there.

Yes but was he a construction worker? That is what I want to know. Sure they have construction workers who drive trucks with explosive materials all the time. Upstate they constantly have to blast rock to make roadways but was this guy doing construction? That is the question.

"Koutosopakis is a Vietnam veteran with no prior criminal record, according to the News."

Another by-product of Hanoi Jane and John.

Don't forget everyone that the News Media keeps saying that terrorists are recruiting people who look just like us instead of the stereotypical Arab looking person. Our next attack (god forbid there should be one) MAY be by a person who looks totally like a White European.

By the DNC's yardstick, this guy is more qualified than Bush is to be commander in chief.

The guy might have been a plumber and the suspenders were for butt-crack prevention. You could go into anyones home and find materials to convict them of a crime.

Koutosopakis also had with him rappelling gear

Weren't the authorities looking for possible terrorists who had been rappelling at a training camp in Pakistan? I think it was August, just before the DNC.

I'd say it gives them the right to be a bit tetchy.

Why do you say that? Do you think people should be prosecuted for what they wear? Do you think that New Yorkers have some sort of special immunity to common sense just because terrorists picked NYC for half of their attacks. Doesn't that train of thought give special privileges to people in Virginia and Maryland to act like hysterical bedwetters too?

Sorry, I'll add them the next time :-) (for that matter I should add MD, NJ, MA, DE, RI, ME, and CT too)

A van? Always with the vans! Why don't they ban the van?
