**It found new registration up 60 per cent in strongly Democratic areas and just 12 per cent in strongly Republican ones. **
Looks like Florida could use some help from some FReepers down there to go out walking door to door or else calling all voters!!!
If the Democrats are registering new voters at such a rapid pace and in such large numbers, why aren't these efforts being reflected in the national and state polls? After all, the polling organizations are contacting registered voters, and among them, are singling out those who are likely to vote.
There is a "lag time" between the time they register and the time they make the voter registration data base print-outs.
To: Intolerant in NJ Big deal. These people would be considered in a current sample of registered voters and if they answered the questions appropriately perhaps likely voters. W is still in the lead. All this does is keep the Dems butts from being kicked as badly as it may have have otherwise been kicked.

Democrats outpace GOP in signing up new voters in Florida and Ohio, data showThe analysis by the New York Times of county-by-county data shows that in Democratic areas of Ohio -- primarily low-income and minority neighborhoods -- new registrations since January have risen 250 percent over the same period in 2000. In comparison, new registrations have increased just 25 percent in Republican areas. A similar pattern is apparent in Florida: In the strongest Democratic areas, the pace of new registration is 60 percent higher than in 2000, while it has risen just 12 percent in the heaviest Republican areas. ..........
The Times examined registration from Jan. 1 to July 31 in a sample of counties that included seven of the state's nine largest, along with some smaller rural and suburban counties. Voters do not give a party affiliation when they register in Ohio, but the Times looked at the voting history of ZIP codes to gauge the political inclinations of the new voters.
In rock-ribbed Republican areas -- 103 ZIP codes, many of them rural and suburban areas, that voted by 2 to 1 or better for George W. Bush in 2000 -- 35,000 new voters have registered, a substantial increase over the 28,000 that registered in those areas in the first seven months of 2000. The Ohio Republican Party said it was pleased with the results.
But in heavily Democratic areas -- 60 ZIP codes mostly in the core of big cities like Cleveland, Dayton, Columbus and Youngstown that voted 2 to 1 or better against Bush -- new registrations have more than tripled over 2000, to 63,000 from 17,000.
End snip
There are about 12 big Democratic counties in Ohio. These are the counties where Cleveland, Toledo,Columbus, Akron, Canton, Columbus, Youngstown, Dayton and Cincinnati are located.
That leaves 76 other counties. About 60 of those counties are Republican strongholds.
The New York times compares the Democratic Percentage numbers in one or two of those 12 heavily Democratic counties and says it is greater than the percentage numbers of Republican counties.
Let me put it in number terms. We think the Democrats can at the most register about 70 thousand new Democratic voters. At last count they have registered 20 thousand in the Cleveland area. Democrats have much smaller numbers in the other big Democratic counties.
The Repubilcan goal is to register 100,000 new Bush voters. Note I said Bush voters.. not Republicans. We expect to to exceed our goal.
Rove calculated that if we register and vote 100,000 new people for Bush, there is zero way that Kerry can win Ohio.
Rove's initial calculations on Ohio Christians who are registered Democrats but will vote for Bush were, to coin a phrase, "misunderestimated."
Oh .. and the line that both parties have spent millions registering voters in Ohio is a Lie. The Democrats are paying canvasers $10 per person registered. The Republican workers are all volunteers.
There are unpaid Repubican volunteers in every county.. going door to door. They are supervised and coordinated by an unpaid County Campaign Chair. The unppaid county chair works with a paid Bush campaign staffer. Each paid staffer has several counties to coordinate. New registrations are just one of the paid staffers duties. The Bush campaign has not spent anywhere near the millions the Kerry campaign has spent because we are not buying registrations.
The Democrats are having problems with fake registrations. They are being challenged right and left. Republicans are not being challenged.
Bush volunteers are instructed to help the person to register. Then we turn their registration form into the local Campaign office. That form and the info on it is checked for validity before it is turned into the board of election.
The Democrats paid registrars have a motivation do sign up inelegebile people. Republican volunteers have every motivation to see that every one is properly registered. And the office staff has even more of a motivation to see they are done right. After all ... We are volunteers. Five fakes do not equal 50 bucks for us, as it does for the Democratic workers. We are trying to elect George Bush not earn some quick cash.
The Bush campaign is spending money to assure the Democrats register real voters. It should be obvious that it costs less to check them than it does to forge them... Ask Dan Rather how that works.
The Times as usual sent a reporter out to get the story they wanted. They reported the Democrat spin.
The real story on the ground is quite different.
Good news. Republicans everywhere need to deal with Democrat registrations of dead people, felons, illegal aliens.
I also suspect there will be a LOT of college students registered in two states. The voter registration drives in the colleges have been intensive. Someone needs to figure out how to identify students who vote both at home and at college.
There used to be corrupt Republican machines, but most of them seem to have shriveled up. The Nassau County Republicans on Long Island fell of their own weight of corruption. They used to be good at countering the corrupt Democrat machines in NY. Same apparently with the Republican machine in Illinois, who now appear to be bumbling idiots. They no longer offer a realistic counterweight to Daley.
Thank you so much for your analysis, Common Tator! It is greatly appreciated and provides much insight into how these things work.
Right on the money. This "problem" is the bane of the Democrat Vote Machine. It all has to do with building a political ideology on the promise of Free Stuff. Most of the individuals who buy this line are so thoroughly committed to Free Stuff that they won't get off their couches long enough to go down to the polls and vote for it, assuming perhaps that even this tiny bit of "work" invalidates the purity of the idea.
And thank the Lord for that is what I say. If all of the people in favor of Free Stuff ever did show up at the polls the Liberals would win every office in an avalanche. The Republicans, dubious about the concept of Free Stuff, have an incentive to get to the polls and generally do so.
That is certainly true. What bothers me is the self destruction of the Republican party in Illinois is often applauded here on FR.
The ominous note in this article is that the "better job of registration" slant could be used to explain how 110% of the eligible voters got to the polls in Democrat areas of Florida.
I made a trip to the grocery store the other day and sitting out front was a guy with sign which said, "DEMOCRATS REGISTER HERE". I was at the story for over an hour (busy store), and the guy had NO TAKERS.
I am going to check with my local elections office because I don't think California law allows you to be selective in who can register to vote. There's only one form used to register to vote - which tells me what the guy's doing is totally illegal.
San Diego County still has a majority of 150,000 registered repubs vs. dems. If repubs would just get out and vote .. they could defeat these dems EVERY TIME.
