I live in an inner ring suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. Ten years ago there were six mom & pop hardware stores within two miles of my house. Home Depot moved into the area, now there are three. When you shop at an independent you get to interact with somebody who knows his business, even if you don't know you kneed a left handed framistat, the owner has probably encountered the same situation dozens of times. You want help at Home Depot?. Good luck.
On the other hand, I've found exactly the same items for half off or better at H.D. I will pay a premium to shop a local but if I can save ten or twenty dollars at H.D. for the same item, well...
