I just volunteered to become a member of my local draft board (vanity)

It's time to face cold, hard reality. Since I qualify to be a member of the board, I've registered to receive an application. The WOT demands that responsible and sober citizens make decisions over - as the site explains - who receives deferments, postponements, or exemptions from military service.

I highly recommend registering for the sake of our country and way of life.

OH SWEET. Make sure you only draft the kids of registered Democrats when the nasty old Bush and his evil minions reimpose the draft after the election.

(Just Kidding)

I knew you were kidding, but if selected I will be the toughest SOB on the board concerning deferments.

Is this related to the secrete operations of the draft that so many dems have been talking about?

No, this is posted on the Selective Service web site. It is of my opinion that a form of draft will have to be reinstated. The numbers (1.4 billion Muslims x .10 Islamofascists = 140 million fanatics who want to destroy our way of life) support my opinion.

because the current war doesnt require it. A draft would lead to more casualities, worse military morale and more attrocities like Abu Grahib.

Why is it people think just anyone can be in the military. The military is a profession. We dont draft people to be police officers or firemen do we?

I have heard a variety of numbers bandied about, 1, 1.2, 1.5 billion Muslims. By my reckoning at last count there were between 2.5 and 3 billion beer drinkers in the world. Guess who's going to win?

I spent two decades in the service. The false cry of "I'm a professional, I'm better" whithers when you count the number of MOH winners who were draftees. Yes, it is problematic when you have folks who don't want to be there - that's where a strong cadre of professional soldiers takes over - but during WWII, Korea and, yes, Vietnam our young men accepted their orders and stepped up to the plate to defend our way of life.

The arguement that a draft would weaken us holds no water with me.

The 140 million fanatics who are hungry, disciplined and willing to sacrifice what's most precious to them. Beer drinkers are only interested in their next brewski.

a draft would destroy the morale of the existing professional army. So many Green troops with poor morale would certainly increase casulities and not to mention it would absolutely tear the country apart.

The fact that draftees did so well in WW2 and Korea doesnt hold water with me becasue there was a little intervening decade called the 1960s, from then on its been down hill

just how big do you think the US Military needs to be? Back in the mid-1980s it was about 1 million more men larger than today yet there was no draft.

Again if the draft is such a good idea, why stop with the military. Lets draft people to become police officers.

The Website you linked to says that you can not be an active or retired member of the armed forces to be a SSS volunteer. Did you need to seek a waiver or did that not come up?

I beg your pardon. Beer drinkers are interested in freedom of choice and will fight for it. Take that from a dedicated, disciplined, willing to "sacrifice for God and Country" soldier (retired), but willing to pick up the gun again. Better me than my son. I know what I'm fighting for...him. He doesn't understand yet.

Because back in the 80s we faced a real threat, the Soviet Union. If you check your history, you'll find that the drawdown started during 41's presidency and produced a horrific attrition rate (this was for the much demanded "peace dividend," result of the collapse of the USSR).

As far as drafting for police forces, no thankee. A federal police force is the last thing a republic needs.

As far as the 60s go, that's a bygone era of the most miscreant, infantile and selfish generations ever, the baby boomers. Today's young people display far more patriotism and selflessness than you can possibly imagine and if called to duty will perform as admirably as the greatest generation.

actually the drawdown in funding actually began very slowly in 1985.

My point about the 1960s is it effected all generations since then, not jsut the baby boomers.

I am disappointed, you have not effectively argued your support for the draft. No facts, no philophisical position, really nothing.

Beer drinkers are an undisciplined mob. Take away their brewskis and you might have an arguement. I'm interested in developing our own set of disciplined, magnificient bastards to make sure that the other bastard fanatics get their wish to meet their maker.

You don't simply pull people from playing video games and let them fly a helicopter or run a tank. There will be no draft simply because the age of conscript armies is over. There will be no more campaign style warfare - everything is high-tech, high precision, high mobility, decentralized control by highly-trained people acting in small groups. This is why Baghdad fell in three weeks and not three months or three years. Now there are old people trapped in the old fantasy of 'national service for all' but the reality is that in the modern military there is no room for cannon fodder nor do you do warfare by handing a kid a gun and telling him where to shoot.
