You are a better journalist than this. Your reference to the vets with assertions of "scurrilous and largely inaccurate attack on the Vietnam service of John Kerry" does NOT fit with the ads. The Swift Boat vets ads address Kerry's action AFTER Vietnam. That is Kerry himself in his own words testifying before Congress scurrilously slandering the Vietnam veterans. They have every right -- indeed the duty -- to react in their own defense. That is Kerry himself in his own words making the disgraceful "medals over the fence" comments denigrating our country. It was Kerry himself who reported to Congress that he had already met with the enemy in Paris.
What has happened to journalism? It has been delivered by courageous veterans who have -- in sworn affidavits -- put their personal reputation and welfare on the line to report the truth about Vietnam veterans. They have NOT been proven false in any of their assertions -- but Kerry has been proven false over and over again by his own or campaign spokesman's or "biographer's" admissions .(Cambodia, self inflicted Purple Hearts, redrafted Silver Star citation NOT signed by Secy. Lehman, only-boat-to-go-back when in fact the other boats never left the scene of the damaged boat, etc.) What has happened? When journalists fail, the internet now reveals their failures.
As one who reads your column I have hopes that you will do better in the future.
