Saline County home builder is constructing a new home, with the profits designated for the local Boys and Girls Club.

The Ken Young Co., its subcontractors and suppliers are building the home.

Several weeks ago, Cindy Doramus, chief professional officer of the club, said she was surprised when she received the call from Young expressing that he wanted to build the house for the club.

"He said, 'My subs, suppliers and I want to build a house on one of my lots and give you the profit.'"

She said her "first reaction was that this must be some type of joke."

"I was overwhelmed. To the best of my knowledge, since the club re-opened some 10 years ago, never has any single organization made such a generous and unselfish offer."

According to Doramus, Young said he "liked what you and your organization do for the kids in our community. This is just our way of saying 'thank you.' However, the credit needs to go to all of my subcontractors and not me. We just want to give something back."

The home is being constructed on lot 97 in the second phase of the Emerald Valley subdivision, which is located on the west side of Alcoa Road.

The three bedroom, two bath home will encompass more than 1,700 square feet. It is situated on a corner lot, which allows the home to offer a side-loading garage. The finished product will be similar to the other homes under construction within the subdivision.

Homes in the neighborhood have prices ranging from $120,000 to $160,000.

In a letter to Young's subcontractors and suppliers, he issued the following plea:

"We at Ken Young Company have decided to give something back to the community of Saline County because the community has always been so good and generous to us. In order to do this, we've chosen to build a house for the Boys and Girls Club of Saline County.

"We want to extend the invitation to all of you to help in whatever way you deem appropriate. We would like to encourage all subcontractors to give their suppliers the opportunity to participate through donations or discounted materials. If we can keep our costs low, the profit of the house will be even greater which will benefit the Boys and Girls Club that much more.

"Anything you can do to help in this endeavor is much appreciated."

"Mr. Young and his associates will never realize the total impact this gesture has made and will continue to make on behalf of the children in Saline County," Doramus said.

"I will never forget his statement that maybe this effort will motivate others to just support something. If it is not the Boys and Girls Club, just find something and do your part. I think we are all called to do that."

Young's company has been building homes since 1978. This year the company has built about 30 homes in the Emerald Valley Subdivision. His company previously built in west Little Rock, including Chenal Valley. Young now builds exclusively in Saline County.
