I liked Lennon although not his politics. Most people are for the death penalty and it figures that most of Lennon's fans are pro-death penalty. I felt his killer should die ... no matter what his family felt.

His killer should not be released.

I too acknowledge Lennon's talent and like much of his music. And yes, most people are for the death penalty. But I strongly believe that most of the true-believer Lennon devotees (who not only like his music but his politics as well) give lip service to being anti death penalty except when their ox is gored.
