Obama Says Religion, Tradition Shape Opposition To Gay Marriage

September 24, 2004 — Democratic U-S Senate candidate Barack Obama says he's opposed to gay marriage because of tradition and his Christian beliefs. But Obama says he supports civil unions for gays and lesbians and would oppose a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Obama made his comments today during a taping of W-B-B-M Radio's "At Issue" program.

His Republican opponent, Alan Keyes, has said repeatedly that Obama supports gay marriage. But Obama says he personally believes marriage should be between a man and a woman.

The Democratic candidate also says the issue of gay marriage should be left to the states.

Keyes has made his opposition to abortion and gay marriage a cornerstone of his campaign.

Is Obama being honest about his real views on gay marriage?

Is it possible that Obama's views on gay marriage have been influenced by his exposure to the teachings and message of Alan Keyes?

I don't know how Obama feels personally, but most Dems won't go near support of gay marriage. Missouri and Louisiana just passed bans by ~ 3 to 1 margins.

Tradition and Christian beliefs would also put you against abortion, BO.

And that was left to the states, too, until a judicial fiat imposed it everywhere.

Substitute "abortion" for "gay marriage" and you have the classic cop-out that has been used for 30 years.

Obama is really saying:
"I'm personally against gay marriage, but I won't stop the courts from imposing it against the people's will."

What BS.

I hope that this is an indication that the race in IL tighter than the Dems and the press are letting on.

Keyes said, "What finally caught my eye, however, what finally arrested my attention and forced me to consider whether I not only have the opportunity to oppose [Obama], but the obligation, was when I learned that he had actually, in April 2002, apparently cast a vote that would continue to allow live birth abortions in the State of Illinois."

OBAMA IS A WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING.

I recall Obama once described himself as pro-gay marriage.

I guess a little chat with all those black ministers in Chicago changed his mind.

"But Obama says he supports civil unions for gays and lesbians and would oppose a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage."

This is a distinction without a difference. Civil Union and Marriage are one and the same.

A religious group can certainly perform a marriage, but without the legal filing of the marriage license authorized by the State, the marriage isn't legal and not recognized as a lawful union which benefits from the laws surrounding married couples.

Liberal politicians are always "personally against" stuff that they know will never fly with the electorate, but somehow their "personal convictions" never leak over into their votes for judges who will impose abortion, gay marriage, atheism, and politically correct garbage when crunch time comes. But by then the dumb voters aren't paying attention, or so goes the calculation.

How about...

..."Gay Marriage Shapes Opposition to Religion/Tradition!"

As long as we're calling a spade a spade Obama....

A civil union is a marriage by another name.

Well....if Obama is pro-muslim as many here believe, he woudl of course despise gay marriage (as do all Muslims).

Right, because Alan Keyes is the only person out there talking against same-sex marriage, and the one people are actually listening to.

Thank heavens he barnstormed Louisiana or we would have lost that vote. :P
