Maputo - A voracious lion said to have killed 14 people since the beginning of the year finally met his maker in a hail of bullets and arrows from police and villagers in northern Mozambique, state radio reported on Wednesday.
Two people were seriously injured on Tuesday in the hunt for the beast near the town of Mocimboa da Praia, about 3 000km north of the capital Maputo in the Cabo Delgado province, before the lion was finally killed by rifle fire.
"The operation was long and difficult because the animal resisted several arrow strikes and bullets and it even injured some people before it died, two of them seriously," said district administrator Henrique Nduda.
He told villagers in the two localities near the town where most of the attacks occurred to return home.
"The lion has killed 14 people in the area since the beginning of the year," Nduda said.
In August, reports alleged that escaping animals from neighbouring South Africa's Kruger National Park were sowing panic among locals in the south of the country after several people were attacked.
Too many poachers not enough lions.
"Meets his maker".....I wonder what lion heaven would be.......
An extremist low carb lion I bet.
I'm shocked. Call PETA immediately!
An extremist Atkins diet cultist lion.
I wonder what lion heaven would be.......
Hopefully there are a lot of well-fed gun-control advocates waiting to greet them.
What a stupid title for this article.
Ping.
"The lion sleeps tonight."
Perhaps Mozambican-American Teresa Heinz should be asked to comment.
That's the problem! They should have hung Moore out for bait. What lion could resist a caloric meal like *that*??
On the other hand... lions do have some pride (getting ready to duck thrown objects, here).
I heard an interesting story a while back, though. There was a lion who was snacking up the workers on one of the trans-African railways, early in the last century, and nobody could kill him. He got away so many times and ate so many workers that the natives were getting superstitious about him, like he was some sort of lion spirit god, or something. Finally, they sent for a pygmy hunter... and he got the lion within a few days, with a poisoned arrow.
