Did Kerry Lie about Attending the Signing of the Gulf-War Ceasefire
O'Reilly Factor ^ | 24 Sept 2004 | Rokke

Posted on 09/23/2004 9:18:29 PM PDT by Rokke

I just watched the rerun of O'Reilly's 2001 interview with Kerry discussing the need to invade Iraq. In that interview, Kerry said the following: "I mean, I was in Safwan. I went there when the signing of the armistice took place at the end of the war." I've watched the video of the cease-fire signing at Safwan. It was still in a combat zone. I don't remember seeing anyone but military officers. Can anyone provide additional insight, or has Kerry lied again.

FWIW, I've been googling the Safwan Accords and I can't find any references to anyone other than military personnel being there.

In April 1990–four months before Iraq invaded Kuwait–Saddam received a delegation of U.S. senators who assured him the U.S. stood by him. Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) assured Saddam that Bush would veto any threatened sanctions on Iraq.

Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.) joined Saddam in blasting the "haughty and pampered" media that had criticized Saddam’s regime. Sen. Howard Metzenbaum (D-Ohio) told Saddam: "I am a Jew and a staunch supporter of Israel . . . I am now aware that you are a strong and intelligent man and that you want peace."7

Something funny in this article.

At the time of the signing of the original ceasefire, 1INF was in charge of Safwan, not the 1st Armored.

I know Gen. Franks moved some units around after the ceasefire, and that there were a unit of Abrams and Bradleys on the airstrip at Safwan during the signing, but I think that was the Big Red One's armor, not 1AD's.

With the date of the signing a matter of historical record, and the date of this trip pinned to March 16 per thie referenced article, it ought to be fairly easy to nail down whether he was there or not.

I have an archived copy of an article from the Boston Globe, regarding Kerry's being where he said he was...probably for the first time in his life. Since I paid to get it, it won't do any good to link to it, so if anyone wants a copy, I'll forward it to them in a private message.

Im sure this was a pretty significant meeting for the general, Im sure he would remember who was there from the US side, ask him.

Second see if there is a record in the senate if Kerry was present that day, or voted on something....

This is a great find! I hope you've caught Kerry in another whopper. I saw the Dec. 91 interview with Kerry on O'Reilly last night...even if he was there, it proves again that he has filp flopped on Iraq.

I couldn't find Kerry in the many pictures but I did find someone dressed in the uniform of an Iraqi general who looks suspiciously like Karl Rove.

Thanks for a great post.

But don't forget, the reason you can't see Kerry is because he took the shot:)

"I mean, I was in Safwan. I went there when the signing of the armistice took place at the end of the war."

You must read the nuance into this. He was there at the base or maybe in the city (if there is one) but he wasn't at the actual signing. He was probably doing some shopping.

Actually Kerry has little wiggle room after all! According to the offical timeline the war ended March 3 with the ceasefire. Kerry's later arrival was after the war! Kerry lied! :-)

By February 26, U.S. and Allied Arab forces, along with the underground Kuwaiti Resistance, controlled Kuwait City and Allied air forces pounded the retreating Iraqi occupation army. In southern Iraq, Allied armored forces stood at the Euphrates River near Basra, and internal rebellions began to break out against Saddam's regime. On February 27, President Bush ordered a cease-fire and the surviving Iraqi troops were allowed to escape back into southern Iraq. On March 3, 1991, Iraq accepted the terms of the cease-fire and the fighting ended.

Thanks for finding that. That's exactly what we need. It is clear that John Kerry did make it to Safwan near the end of the war. I'm not sure what was going on there at the time, but it is not accurate to say he lied.

If anyone sent anything to the media, it would be a good idea to let them know this was a false alarm. And I apologize for the unnecessary excitement.

It appers the angle to go with is not "he lied", but "he embellished his record again"

Registered,

How about doctoring this pic with Tiny Tom Dasshole under the table and Kerry looking over Stormin' Norman's shoulder appearing "nuanced"?

Yes, I know about this flip-flop (rather, a lie) to this constituent. Shall we revive this?
