Burkett: Lockhart Asked Me for Rathergate Documents
Former National Guard commander Bill Burkett has become the first player in the CBS forged document scandal to implicate John Kerry's presidential campaign, telling the Fort Worth Star Telegram that top Kerry aide Joe Lockhart pressed him to turn over damaging evidence on George Bush.
During a single phone conversation with Lockhart, Burkett told the Telegram that he suggested a "couple of concepts on what I thought (Kerry) had to do" to beat Bush.

In return, he said, Lockhart tried to "convince me as to why I should give them the documents." Lockhart has staunchly denied that he ever discussed the forged documents with Burkett, though he confirmed that a conversation had indeed taken place in a call arranged by "60 Minutes" producer Mary Mapes.
But with Burkett now claiming otherwise, Republicans have their first evidence of Rathergate wrongdoing that directly implicates the Kerry campaign.
Burkett also complained that "60 Minutes" anchorman Dan Rather tried to set him up as a "fall guy" in the forged document scandal during his mea culpa broadcast on Monday.
"He snipped [my interview] apart to cover them," he told the Telegram. "That's all that that evening news was - to find a fall guy. And it was me."
"Dan Rather ruined my reputation in front of 70 million people," he added.
Burkett's former lawyer said Tuesday that the controversial Guardsman was preparing a lawsuit against CBS.

CBS source denies plotting with Kerry
By Jack Douglas Jr.
Star-Telegram Staff Writer
This article has been corrected from the version published in the newspaper and online Friday morning to reflect that Bill Burkett was referring to conversations with CBS when he said, "They tried to convince me as to why I should give them the documents." The earlier version incorrectly reported that he had discussed the documents with Joe Lockhart of the Kerry campaign.
I don't know about CBS, but this may ruin Kerry's little plans!!!
You very well may be right. It sure looks like a hit on the Kerry campaign.
Come on down, Hillary.
Do you think Burkett made the documents himself? I tend to think that he did.
Do you believe Burkett when he says Lockhart wanted the documents? If it's true, I wish he could prove it, but Burkett is "out there".
Where, in Fort Marcy Park?
Maybe somebody can fake his suicide note.
........... while you can.
Given the recent ratings, more like 70,000 but whose counting?
LOL!
Rather's ratings are down 49% in NYC. That's quite a number!
The tie between Van Os, Burkett's original lawyer and candidate for dem Texas Supreme Court, his ties to the Austin, San Antonio dems...peaks my interest...Robin Rather's ties to these dems, ...
Burkett had the long told "cleansing the files story"(Albaugh has called it a lie, stupid to cleanse copies when the files were in Denver).....I have no idea if Burkett did the fabricated documents but he was the perfect conduit because of his crusade against Bush since he became ill in the Guard and Bush was Governor..
He said he was there and heard two conversations about "cleansing" the files and then embellished it to seeing docs in the trash and even peeking...planting the idea that someone could have taken them or at least read them in 98..(Burkett used the term reconstructing or reassembling Bush's file in one post to a dem board. Reinventing is more like it.)..I even look at the Marty Staudt crusader..He has a passionate interest in the Bush Guard service and one can google his name.
The next step in the tale was to produce the docs and like magic, they appeared.and were conveyed to CBS in this election period...How CBS could possibly trust this Bush hater, crusader and not trust Killian's family is a clue to the mindset.
Someone who did not really understand ANG language and practices in 72 and was not bright enough to understand the difference in word perfect and typewriters did them...It wasn't a Texas Bush supporter.
127..my rambling thoughts.
might I remind you good sir, these same rodents may well be attempting to get the Wicked Witch elected to the WH in four years
provided they have finished their sentences(one must always have hope)
could we not be seeing the air leaking out of some particular future dem campaigns right before our very eyes?
(see-'tis good to always remain hopeful)
Right! I fear now, here comes the Old Media major STONEWALL. Sure, they've been picking at Blather and CBS because we (the internet and FR in particular) forced them to, but now that the DNC and Kerry look like they're in on the scam, I think they'll not cover this part of the story at all! The sleazoids know their little lefty plan is close to blow up in their faces. And we all know they can't afford to lose this election.
Damn the Old Media and a great segment of uninformed and disinterested American voters who don't have a clue.

Public confidence in press reliability reaches 30-year low
It's hurting the press...the libs mouthpiece.
It is unreasonable to trust Burkett....a known liar.
Nor should Lockhart or cBS be trusted. They, too, are liars.
Investigate, get the facts, and then prosecute -- the only thing that makes sense.
Actually Lockheart and Burkett were discussing Macciavelli.
CBS did call the Bush campaign -- three hours before they broadcast the story.
I don't believe that is accurate. According to the USA Today: "Sept 8, 9:30 p.m.: The White House e-mails copies of the four memos in the 60 Minutes report to reporters and editors across the country. The date "09/07/2004" and the words "CBS News" are at the top of each page, indicating they are copies that CBS faxed to the White House the previous day."http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/president/2004-09-21-guard-scoops-skepticism_x.htm
This does not neccesarrily indicate they were faxed to the White House. They could have been faxed w/in CBS.
There is this reference too:"White House communications director Dan Bartlett had agreed to talk to "60 Minutes," but only on condition that the CBS program provide copies of what were being billed as newly unearthed memos indicating that President Bush had received preferential treatment in the National Guard. The papers were hand-delivered at 7:45 a.m. CBS correspondent John Roberts, filling in for Rather, sat down with Bartlett at 11:15."

I sure hope you're wrong but it crossed my mind also. I really hated hearing Rather interrogate him for his own defense the other day. It was pathetic and horrible. Big Danny can't stand up for himself, he has to start point pointing fingers in other directions.
At this point Burkett is either a liar, disturbed, or BOTH.
So either way Danny boy messed up when he counted on a bad source. It's all Danny's fault but he just won't shoulder it. I also even wondered if HE'D do something to himself. It's amazing how no one knows how to give a real apology and then just go on. Although the repercussions in this case require much more legally, that still should have been the first thing to try to do. Oh well, it seems to be all wasted logic on those people.
Thats what I meant. He's obviously disturbed, and has apparently been in a psychiatric hospital before. Plus, he may be in some serious trouble if he had a hand in forging docs, or conspired to mislead.
Actually, in THAT paragraph, I meant Rather. I wouldn't wish him to be driven to that either. I'd highly prefer a personal revelation ala Charles Colson.
I dream big, don't I?
An unimpeachable nut.
But that's a good quality :o) I tend to be too pessimistic about leftists, so it's good to have people like you balance us out and bring perspective.
Chuck Colson. Great man! Excellent testimony :o)
You've got a great profile page! Now, you have to see my page (the stuff after those comix)--my fave books, music, etc.
