Bush Surprises Departing Troops With Gift -- Himself

BANGOR, Maine, Sept. 23 -- It had been a pretty glum day for Spec. Brian Parker, who along with the other members of his National Guard unit said goodbye to their families and departed on a charter flight for a long-term stint in Iraq. But then, on a refueling stop here, a familiar figure boarded the plane. "We were down when we left our families," Parker said, giving a thumbs down. "But then we heard Air Force One was here. It's a good morale boost." Thursday's Question: Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi delivered a speech to a joint meeting of Congress today. Which of the following foreign leaders has given the most addresses before a joint meeting of Congress? For the troops, grimly heading toward an 18-to-24-month assignment in Iraq, it was a welcome lift. For Bush, who has been accusing his Democratic presidential opponent, Sen. John F. Kerry, of demoralizing the troops in Iraq by criticizing the war effort, it was a chance to demonstrate his devotion to the troops. "May God bless you all," the commander in chief said over the plane's public address system. "May God keep you safe." ...

Leave it to Dana Milbank to try to make this visit a negative:

Bush's impromptu visit with the departing soldiers came with some risk. It could remind the American public that more and more reservists and Guard members are being removed from their workplaces and sent on dangerous assignments in an increasingly bloody Iraq.

"Bush's impromptu visit with the departing soldiers came with some risk."

Doing the right thing often comes with risks. Following the polls and weighing the political costs may be a better way to campaign. Campaigning is not leading. Bush is a leader. Bush is a cowboy. Bush is an American.

Something this writer will probably never be, and something that Kerry will never be.

John F. Kerry, we are told, stands "accused of demoralizing troops."

I would says that JFnKerry is actually, in fact, demoralizing our troops.

I know this from my personal conversations with troops and from my years of experience as a Chaplain....one of my duties being to advise the commander on many aspects of morale.

Specifically, Kerry tells them they are not really defending America...and that their sacrifices are a wasted effort, wasted time, and wasted lives.

The KKK (KorruptKerryKamp) has been demoralizing our troops for months.

Of course, Dana Milbank. This is one guy I hope gets caught by the pajama people.

I derive some satisfaction in that I KNOW he went up and down the aisles of that plane trying to find someone to bad-mouth the President and couldn't find one. I bet he hated that.

I've noticed a big change in both CNN and ABC radio news this week.

snakes may shed their skin but they are still snakes. ;-)

The CNN stuff I have seen onboard our ship programming hardly seems Pro-Bush to me, btw.

No Fox here either,, and strangely , I'm not suffering any withdrawals either. :-)
