This might explain the emphasis on "changed his story" in the Rather mea culpa: setting the groundwork for a credibility problem with Burkett to protect CBS, and erecting bulwark to innoculate Lockhart and others. 'He's a fruitcake liar.

One interesting aspect of the characterization of the documents is they are forgeries. Forgery implies they are copies of 'real documents' when they are not. They are fakes, pure and simple. Nothing was forged the whole story was a fraud using fake documents. A distinction worth noting.

May I interrupt this thread for a moment with a plea?

Seizures are unrelated to mental or emotional illness. I've heard people on television and read comments on these threads that show incredible ignorance on this.

Don't make FR look stupid. Burkett may have been hospitalized for depression or whatever, but seizures are not to be associated with mental illness.

"Bill Burkett tells the FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM that he has suffered four seizures since being identified"

I hope that some of these democratic party hacks that claim to be Burkett's allies help the guy. My sense is that the guy is in serious mental and physical condition and that all the high powered campaign/media types are dumping all blame on him. The document damage has been done and someone should see that he is getting proper medical attention and that he is kept out of the line of fire of Kerry/CBS camp until he is recovered.

But that couldn't have happened! Lockhart says they never discussed the documents, or the national guard! What possible reason would the man who hated Bush more than anyone have for telling a close advisor of Bush's opponent about the fact he had (forged) documents that would destroy Bush's credibility, and why would someone like Lockhart be at all interested in such a thing? I mean, it makes no sense!

Joe Lockhart tried to "convince me as to why I should give them the documents."

If this is true, the Kerry camp has some big problems.

...claimed Thursday that Kerry adviser Joe Lockhart tried to "convince me as to why I should give them the documents."

But Joe Lockhart himself assured us that the documents weren't even discussed...

The most impressive thing about the DNC and Kerry campaign is the poor quality of scum they elevate to senior positions. Lockhardt has to win the idiot of the year award for this one. Terry McAuliffe comes in close second. Kerry is being poorly served by dopes like them. Looks to me like the only reason those guys are on board is to ride the money train until it runs off the tracks.

For some reason every time I read anything about CBS, I'm reminded of one of those moments when I used to walk in on four small boys and ask "You did it?". Fingers could point forever.

Poor John Kerry can't manage to keep the press interested in him for more than two days thanks to the Clintons!

I'm starting to think that Burkett typed the memos, personally.

You mean...........you mean..............Lockhart actually..........ummm.............lied???????

Gee golly gosh. I'm stunned, I tell you. I thought he was merely getting advice from a concerned citizen on how to better respond to the Swifties and all. Golly.

Sigh.......................these Dems just suck. They are SO bad at lying it's freakin' unbelievable. How I'd love five minutes in a room alone with Lockhart.........

Hey, isn't Burkett's lawyer Os? Burkett better retain another: he's so totally expendable. No lawyer serves two masters.

WOW! Now it makes sense. I was trying to connect the dots and this may have been the missing piece.

Here's my theory.

Lockhart was already familiar with the documents from 2000 when Gore decided not to use them. He couldn't have Burkett pass them to him directly, so he used Mapes and CBS as an intermediary.

Mapes and Lockhart probably worked together on orchestrating the hand-off to cover themselves, but didn't think it all the way through.
